I have had 30 years experience across the globe (including 16 years in London) as a Creative Director for some of the world’s most prestigious agencies. In 2007 I co-founded ‘Earth Hour’ reportedly the biggest environmental social movement in the history of mankind. My last role was in Tokyo as Creative Chief across the entire Ogilvy portfolio of brands.On my return from Japan I went client side and became the Director of Brand and Innovation at Telstra. My role there was defined whilst in motion. The essence was to imbue the business with the power of creativity. This was manifest most noticeably in re-defining the brand and a completely new persona. I wrote ‘It’s How We Connect’ which became the driving force for the entire organisation.After Telstra the Labor Party who at the time was suffering from the worst public image in decades approached me. I was thrilled to be able to work with Julia Gillard but the damage that the party had inflicted upon itself and the ruthless media binge against Julia Gillard was insurmountable. However it remains one the most exciting challenges I have ever faced. Soon after I was asked by Telstra to help design and launch a totally new Fixed Broadband Service to non-Telstra customers. After 10 weeks of intense effort and in collaboration with Deloitte Digital we launched Belong (belong.com.au). In parallel to these events I have been developing new products and am currently launching a new location based messaging app (www.placear.com)The challenges for marketers are many, amongst them the fragmentation of media and the proliferation of social and mobile. The ‘always on’ phenomenon has created a new paradigm for customers. Couple that with the customers yearning for authenticity means the competition for their attention has never been more complex.The challenge for traditional agencies is equally complex and has given rise to an urgent need for innovation.
