I have over 30 years’ experience in construction including 10 years running my own business in the UK, installing anti-slip and self-levelling compounds in industrial and commercial premises throughout Europe. I have focused on safety in civil and construction for the past ten years working on several packages on the SewerFix Wet Weather Alliance (SWWA) for seven years.In my previous role as WHS Advisor on the (SewerFix Wet Weather Alliance), I contributed to the Alliance’s outstanding safety record of over 1.3 million work hours with one LTI. This was achieved by instilling a positive safety culture in all workers at the time of induction and the promotion of safety on a daily basis by all Alliance personnel. This focus on safety has resulted in an extremely low incident rate but a high completion of works, LTIFR: 0.72. I aso spent two years at Quakers Hill constructing a new Pump Station where workers frequently come into contact with contaminated waste products e.g. (sewage). To prevent illness i introduced a safety initiative working with a nominated medical provider to immunise all site workers against hepatitis A, B and Tetanus. Another safety initiative was distributing ‘Scratch and Win’ cards to employees who are doing the right thing. I also ensured that internal staff were provided with ongoing training (VOC management) so they were able to operate plant, work in confined spaces and working at heights.I am passionate about safety and know that workers will not follow safety standards if they are not well communicated. As new safety legislation becomes more complex, I believe it is vital that legislative changes and requirements can be easily understood by people in the field. To achieve this, I conducted safety training, tool box talks and pre-start meetings. I use whatever communication method will work, including the use of audio visual aids and posters.I am currently working for Sydney Water as a Senior Safety Coordinator managing corporate safety.
