Tourism is an exciting industry to be a part of and in a regional setting offers a win win opportunity for us as generational custodians to hand on a healthy natural asset to our children and still improve the economic, social and cultural capital of local communities. My role with Corangamite Shire requires liaison with a range of community, government and industry stakeholders in order to work strategically and independently towards outcomes that improve visitor experience and build regional economic capacity.Working in visitor services directly connects me with visitors who travel from around Australia and around the world to experience South West Victoria. Their daily requests for information and support are a barometer of how well we are performing as a destination and indicate where opportunities may exist to improve services, diversify the business and experience mix and attract investment matched directly to need.The pathway to purchase of tourism product has shifted significantly in the last 5 years. Destination research and inspiration is now sourced and provided across multiple platforms and multiple devices and our radar for aspirational travel experiences is never really switched off.Provision of technology and license to create content for council managed social media and web platforms has transformed the scope of a bricks and mortar visitor services offering. As a business unit a Visitor Information Centre now has an opportunity to reach out beyond the counter to more visitors earlier in the holiday planning process more immediately and arguably with more influence than ever before. Gotta love that :)
