Mark Smith vigorously defends individuals and businesses during all stages of criminal and other government enforcement actions and in business litigation matters. He has been successful in persuading government enforcement and administrative agencies to conclude their investigations without commencing a prosecution or filing a civil complaint. As a result, some of his best results are never made public. Before joining Laredo & Smith, LLP, he was Deputy Chief of the Criminal Bureau in the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, where he supervised more than fifty prosecutors assigned to the Environmental Crimes Strike Force, Public Integrity Division, Economic Crimes Division, and the High Technology Crimes Unit. He oversaw the prosecution of more than one hundred public corruption cases and personally tried cases ranging from securities fraud to public corruption offenses. He also acted as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in joint federal and state criminal investigations and prosecutions. Prior to his work for the Attorney General’s office, Mr. Smith served as a public defender in New York City. Mark currently serves as President of the Boston Bar Association, one of the oldest bar associations in America, which has over 12,000 members. He is also former Chairman of the Education and Criminal Law Committees of the BBA. Since 2010, Mr. Smith has been named a “Massachusetts Super Lawyer."
