Delivering an "Affective Interactions" workshop, I lead small groups in activities designed to improve their communication skills and interactions with colleagues and stakeholders. The workshops are typically based around a difficult conversation or presentation each participant has experienced. Together we explore how different forms of communication can affect outcomes both positively and negatively, and how playing with these can transform an interaction. A key member of the recruitment team for internal, external and graduate recruitment days, I lead the role-play element of interviews for corporate clients including Allianz, the Government Legal Service, Barratt Homes and the Royal Mail. Role-play scenarios are typically around 30 minutes in length, during which I portray a professionally and emotionally-authentic character, in order to make the interaction believable for the candidate. Following the scenario I provide feedback to the recruitment panel, which is a key part of the decision on whether a candidate is ultimately selected. Key skills include:- Understand the actor, candidate and assessor briefs, to ensure the candidate is assessed correctly.Digest large amounts of technical detail from a business case, to develop a believable character.Monitor the trajectory of the role play, redirecting it if needed to help the candidate give their best possible performance.Exhibit strong listening and improvisational skills. Since no two candidates are the same, it is essential to listen closely to what is being said, process this and make a decision about how to proceed in seconds.Provide succinct and relevant observations in line with the assessment guidelines to fellow assessors in a feedback session.
