About Mark E. Ander

I am a research geophysicist/entrepreneur, specializing in gravity & electromagnetics (EM) applied to exploration & to studying the foundations of gravity physics. I have developed many scientific instruments for applications in physics, geophysics, biophysics, national defense, & exploration & I am responsible for creating many technical firsts. I set the world’s record in 1999 for the highest resolution force measurement ever made by measuring earth's gravity field to 1 part in a billion. That record stood for 18 years. I have worked extensively in industry, government, & academia. I am an inveterate entrepreneur with extensive, well-honed business leadership, finance, sales, marketing, & mentoring experience. I either started or purchased 9 successful companies in my career, including LaCoste & Romberg, the world’s oldest, & foremost leader in gravity instrumentation; Exploration Instruments LLC, the largest & best known geophysical instrument rental company in North America; EDCON, a world-wide geophysical exploration services company; & Ander Laboratory, an R&D lab in petroleum geophysics that I started with a “Game Changer” grant from Royal Dutch Shell. My customers included Shell Oil, EXXON, Saudi Aramco, Arco, Conoco, Chevron, Baker Hughes, Schlumberger, Rio Tinto, BHP, Newmont Mining Co., & many others. In Government, I worked for Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) for 15 years on a wide range of geophysical projects with DOE, DOD, AEC, Army, Navy, Air Force, NASA, NOAA, USGS, USAID, World Bank, etc. I organized & led the International Non-Newtonian Gravity Program to search for a Fifth Force. In Academia, worked at UC-LANL Institute of Geophysics & Planetary Physics (IGPP), at Scripps Institution of Oceanography/UCSD, at UC Berkeley, at UT Dallas, at Texas A&M, & at the U of New Mexico. Studied earth's tectonics, particularly rift structures & basin & range, electrical & thermal states of crust & upper mantle, & propagation of EM fields in earth, from toe-kicking death to core. In 1982, I co-founded award-winning "Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience" School for IGPP. Today, SAGE is the most prestigious geophysical field school in the U.S. I am best known for my geophysical research studies & for developing state-of-the-art gravity sensors. Ceo & Chairman Of The Board

Lacoste & Romberg Llc

Founded in 1939 in Austin Texas, L&R holds a unique position, with tremendous brand name recognition, throughout the globe as the oldest and largest manufacturer and researcher of high precision gravimeters. Gravimeters are among the highest precision instruments in the world. I purchased L&R in 1998 with a business plan to leverage its existing core competency to launch new breakthrough technologies. I developed the Graviton EG-Meter - also known as the Aliod Meter, a state-of-the-art software driven gravimeter that sets today’s standard in gravimetry; Developed the Air/Sea Gravity System II, the first new commercial marine gravity meter in over 25 years; Developed the Deep Porosity-Density Logging tool; Increased the overall L&R gravity sensor resolution by nearly an order of magnitude; Increased production capacity 35% to 300%, depending on product line, by integrating increased efficiencies with new software and hardware technologies; Created a new Logging Service Division. In 1999, while testing a new gravity meter, I set the world’s record for the highest resolution measurement ever made by measuring the earth's gravity field to roughly 1 part in a billion. That record stood for 18 years. The funny thing is that I didn't even know that I had set it until after it was broken by Kip Thorne, when he established a huge interferometer to see gravitational waves for the first time and won a Nobel Prize for his work. I sold L&R in 2000.
