About Mark Collett
For the past twenty years, I’ve worked in increasingly responsible roles in tire design engineering and project management for Michelin. I've always had a penchant for data crunching. While I admit my earlier years in data analysis were built on Excel, that experience helped me build a strong problem solving worldview to find nuggets of wisdom in disparate data sources. In the past few years I've "graduated" to Python based tools and am thankful for a much better environment in which to "play!" Currently I’m leading a multimillion-dollar project that uses my trifecta of skillsets: Innovation, Continuous Improvement, and People Management. ► Innovation: I’m curious by nature, so I ask questions. “What if . . . ?” “Suppose we . . . ?” Those questions naturally lead to creative concepts that we then get to design to meet market demand. I especially enjoy discovering insights to these questions in data analysis! ► Continuous Improvement: When the status quo is inefficient, I ask more questions. “How can this be better?” “What’s the cause of this frustration?” Then I find answers. With my teams, I’ve condensed meetings, questioned the validity of (and then eliminated) certain time-consuming procedures, and used proven collaboration tools for remote workers and international teams. These improvements empower and energize people while increasing the quality of output.► People Management: I’ve always been an empathetic person—sensitive to others, interested in their journeys, and compassionate about their struggles. Professionally, this quality was heightened years ago when I taught engineering students at the local community college. Helping potential engineers navigate both the course material and the looming questions of life after college was extremely satisfying. When I began leading teams in the workplace, I made sure I listened first. In my experience, people who feel heard and respected will respond with their best.
Listed skills include Product Development, Catia, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, and 37 others.

Project Manager / Innovation Project Leader
CurrentMy current project includes leading a local and international team of 15 to innovate new tire designs for the light truck market in North America. I was given some leeway in how to approach this ambitious project, so I did a deep dive into Agile software deployment techniques & Design Thinking methods and implemented key takeaways for our context of prototype tire research. This framework gave us the freedom to innovate and test customer-focused models, resulting in project deliverables on-track to be ahead of a typical schedule and on budget. Highlights:► Our team has significantly decreased the time typically required by concept development projects.► We delivered double-digit increases in key tire performance metrics, through several design possibilities.► We enabled these successes by developing our own data-driven virtual performance prediction model, combining outputs of analytic simulation tools and multiple data sets to inform our design decisions. My success in this role has led to recognition as Domain Expert, taking a leadership role in our global Data Science initiative.
Senior Product Research Engineer
This role combined my love of team building, innovative creation, and teaching. I was tasked with creating new tire technology that met a significant market need for one particular performance aspect. Highlights:► My team and I delivered new technology that met every performance goal earlier than planned and within budget. ► We earned ten patents.► I recognized some knowledge gaps among designers regarding the key performance for our project, so I updated the curriculum in the Michelin Design School and provided training on current knowledge and best practices.
Senior Product Development Analyst
My main role here was as the subject matter expert for Finite Element Analysis. I supported original equipment (OE) development projects from concept to tire design simulation. Highlights:► The big highlight during this time was winning the business for the Corvette platform as sole OE supplier. I helped by working with French counterparts to understand and then leverage their breakthrough simulation technology to make our tires fastest around the track.► I improved the team’s efficiency by bringing the resource planning function into the department.
Product Development Cad Engineer
In this role, I had my first exposure to both Project Management & Enterprise-wide software deployment. With the depth of my skills in multiple CAD/CAM/CAE platforms, I worked directly with the CATIA Program Manager to bring feedback to the dev team, lead local user groups and document best-practices in the new platform.
Cad/Cam Manufacturing Engineer
Adjunct Faculty
I taught Engineering Drafting and 3D Parametric CAD classes in the School of Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Technology. I enjoyed teaching, but even more I found great satisfaction in getting to know the students, learning about their motivations, abilities, and goals, and then steering them toward engineering paths through their projects and informal career counseling. Highlight: ► Administrators and students appreciated my subject matter expertise, genuine rapport, and investment in the students’ successes.
