Structural variants affect up to 13% of an individual’s genome, more than all non- structural variants combined, and are known to affect several diseases. I am presently working on field-altering ideas to construct an individual’s (or individual cell’s) true genome structure, and extended, whole genome nucleotide-level haplotypes that will accelerate general biological, and human health research, globally. This work is tailored to long-read sequencing and requires a complete, though more intuitive paradigm shift. I am developing a new aligner and structural variant caller that build off existing technologies, but approaches the problem in an entirely new, simpler way. This will allow researchers to construct an individual’s true genome structure and haplotypes. Additionally, my approach will enable researchers to clearly identify the structural variants and their precise boundaries, unlike existing methods.I am also developing a new approach to complete large portions of the human genome that have evaded researchers since the initial Human Genome Project. Current approaches to complete these large regions have not succeeded, but I think I cracked it! Along the way, I’m also constructing four de novo genomes for two lizards and two bonefish.markebbert.com
Bioinformatics Analyst Iii
Investigated cancer cell mutations using Next-Generation sequencing techniques. Previously studied genetic expression ‘fingerprints’ in cancer. This involves computational algorithm/tools development, statistical analysis, and data mining/management. I also assisted in development of the clinical PAM50 Breast Cancer Intrinsic Classifier
