My major discovery was that regulation of synapse number is a principal mechanism controlling alcohol sensitivity, a predictor of alcohol abuse. This discovery came through the analysis of the gene arouser and its interaction with the PI3K pathway. This work identified independent genetic and social factors that affect both synapse number and alcohol sensitivity. This work was published and selected for a video abstract in Neuron.

Habituation is a form of non-associative learning that enables animals to reduce their reaction to repeated harmless stimuli. I conducted a large scale behavioral screen identifying novel mutations affecting olfactory startle habituation, as well as conducted an analysis of novel alleles of the gene foraging and its underlying neural circuit. This work was published in PLoS One.
