Mark was the recipient of the 2012 Civic Award of Excellence from the Toronto-based Green Roofs for Healthy Cities based on his history of sustainability initiatives dating back to the 1970s and his recent advocacy work on behalf of green roofs in documenting green roof progress in Burlington, a community with a population of only 40,000, with 12 green roof projects completed or underway totaling over 3 acres.

Mark has been a sustainability champion since the 1970s. In Burlington, his sustainability focus intensified. He was a key member of City staff that helped Mayor Peter Clavelle's agenda to make Burlington become "America's Most Sustainable City". Mark's concept for a "floating" community boathouse became a reality, helping to transform the City's waterfront. His design skills strengthened the City's development review process and he led the City's review team for a major hospital expansion, resulting in Vermont's largest "green roof" over the hospital parking garage and UVM Medical School Education Wing. He has lectured on the City's sustainability initiatives around the world.

Brookline, Ma

Mark's "de-paving" concept for a Beacon Street Mall in Coolidge Corner resulted in a $464,00 EDA grant that revitalized this run-down commercial center. His Equity Transfer Assistance Program concept helped lower-income tenants purchase condo-conversion apartments with a $642,00 HUD Grant, ranked first nationally by HUD. The nonprofit and the revolving fund he established have been providing affordable housing decades later. He strengthened the Zoning-Bylaws by adding such terms as "microclimate" to its review process. He also took over the controversial B-2 Project in Brookline Village as a one-person Redevelopment Coordinator following the dissolution of the Brookline Redevelopment Authority. Within 2 years, Mark was able to get this long-stalled $40 million project passed by Town Meeting, using his strong preservation ethic and creative adaptive re-use strategies.
