Mark Ellicott Work Experience Details
  • Outernet Live
    General Manager, Here@Outernet London
Outernet Live Aug 2022 - Present
    West End, London
A decade and a half after the closure of the Astoria in 2009 across the road I end up just a few meters away at a new live music and nightclub venue which opened in August 2022.
  • Heaven (London) Ltd
    General Manager, Heaven Nightclub
Heaven (London) Ltd Jan 2009 - Jan 2022
    West End, London
Responsible for all aspect of this legendary venue’s operation. Instrumental in establishing the club on the live music circuit and broadening its appeal beyond its historical club led programme.
  • Mean Fiddler
General Manager, London Astoria 1 And 2
    Mean Fiddler Jul 2001 - Jan 2009
    West End, London
Transferred over to the Astoria from the Forum following some licensing issues at the former. Both venues then owned and operated by the Mean Fiddler. (Vince Power RIP. Great boss!). GM / DPS of both the larger two thousand capacity London Astoria and its smaller sister venue the one thousand capacity Astoria 2 (formerly Busbys) on Charing Cross Road. Demolished in early 2009 as part of the areas gentrification that has seen the tat and ramshackle nature of the area full of much missed hookers, rent boys and junkies replaced with whatever the opposite of that is. Amazing venues, amazing bands and their destruction an unspeakable act of cultural vandalism.
  • Mean Fiddler
    General Manager, The Forum
    Mean Fiddler Oct 1997 - Jul 2001
    Kentish Town, London
One of the principle medium size concert venues in London (2350 capacity) and which was originally the Town and Country Club. Responsible for all aspects of the venues operation. One of the finest live music venues in the country. Owned and operated by the Mean Fiddler.
  • Fridge Properties Ltd
    General Manager, Brixton Fridge
Fridge Properties Ltd Oct 1994 - Oct 1997
    Brixton, London
One of the greatest and most groundbreaking nightclubs in London over the course of the past 50 years. Owned and operated by two of the most creative people it was my privilege to work for, Andrew Czezowski and Susan Carrington. Andrew and Susan had been the brains behind the legendary punk club The Roxy in Covent Garden in 1976/7. Their tales of being at the forefront of the whole revolution that was going on at that time when I was a young teenager living for the arrival of the NME each Thursday in Devon had me spellbound. Their like is now conspicuous by its absence in the music world. That they followed up The Roxy with two different Fridge Nightclubs (in different locations in Brixton) testament to their vision. Great fisting anecdote I’d like to share from those days though not sure this is the best forum.
  • Bass Clef Ltd
    General Manager, Bass Clef
Bass Clef Ltd Mar 1991 - Jun 1994
    Hoxton, London
Small pre gentrification era Hoxton jazz venue incorporating two clubs in one (Bass Clef and Tenor Clef). Subsequently became The Blue Note. Owned by Peter Ind, legendary jazz double bassist. Peter was a crazy dude. Looked like a benevolent wizard. Sort of a cross between Gandalf and Karl Marx. He wrote a book once called ‘Cosmic Metabolism’. I only got the job because we shared the same star sign. He once gave me an album of his called ‘Jazz Bass Baroque’. An album full of double bass solos. It was…uh…a challenging listening experience.
  • Boddingtons Brewery Ltd
    Assistant Manager, Dingwalls
Boddingtons Brewery Ltd Oct 1987 - Mar 1991
    Camden, London
Assistant to the GM at a time when the dance scene and Madchester were exploding. The principle duty manager on site whilst trading and responsible for its operational and compliance whilst open. Well, in theory anyway. Memories of early Happy Mondays and Stone Roses shows, Blur performing when they were still called Seymour, crazy Boys Own club nights featuring Andy Weatherall on the decks, Jah Shaka and Joey Jay hosting sweet smelling dub sessions, Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls playing his last UK show before he left this mortal coil, and just being a witness to the last major muso-cultural revolution before the corporates finally turned everything a shade of dull monochrome grey. 1987/8/9 vs 2024? No contest.
  • Keele University Students' Union (Keele Su)
    Entertainment Manager
Keele University Students' Union (Keele Su) Jun 1986 - Jun 1987
Elected as an SU Sabbatical Officer to this one year full time role, I had a great time just booking all my favourite bands and artists (The Fall, John Cooper Clarke, Misty In Roots, The Damned, The Mission, the late great Divine, Alien Sex Fiend etc) without really knowing what I was doing. It didn’t matter. Back then the notion of making money and ending with a profit was deemed politically unsound and so I was happy to fritter away the budget, such as it was, on whoever it was that I booked. The agents I dealt with no doubt loved me. Times of course have since changed. Much of the time was spent reading the NME in a state of chemically enhanced befuddlement and working out who I was going to book next. Apologies to students in that mid eighties period when in addition to my responsibilities as the Ents boss was my role as the DJ at the Friday night ‘Union disco’. Yes I know you resented having to listen to obscure album tracks by The Fall, Jesus and Mary Chain and the Banshees when all you really wanted to hear was the latest bollocks by Shalamar, Madonna and Five Star but I was only trying to educate you. It was for your own good.
