About Mark Ezzell

Mark Ezzell has a twenty-year history leading statewide public safety and health programs. His specialty is managing organizations that fund innovative projects that advance public health and safety.Mark was appointed in July 2017 by Governor Roy Cooper as Director of the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program (GHSP), which coordinates efforts to make North Carolina's roads safer for all. GHSP provides approximately $27 million per year in grant funds to local and state organizations, and also leads award-winning public awareness projects to reduce impaired driving, increase seat belt use, and acheive other traffic safety outcomes. In addition, Mark serves as Governor's Representative for Highway Safety. He also serves as a member of the Governor's Highway Safety Association (GHSA) Board of Directors.In 2021 he recieved the Kevin E. Quinlan Award for Excellence in Traffic Safety, the highest traffic safety award given by Responsibility.org, for his work advancing ignition interlock use in North Carolina. He has been named a Distinguishes Alumi of Campbell University, and has been named a Lifetime Member of the Raleigh Jaycees. Previously, Mark served as Executive Director of the Addiction Professionals of North Carolina (APNC), which serves the state’s substance use disorder treatment and prevention professionals. He has also directed tobacco-free schools & college efforts for the NC Health & Wellness Trust Fund, a statewide public health foundation. Mark has also worked with the NC Governor’s Crime Commission, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and as chair of the NC Council on Developmental Disabilities. Mark has previously served as chair of the Wake County Board of Elections and has served on numerous local and state nonprofit boards, and presently serves as Vice Chair of the Healing Transitions Board of Directors.
