He has AB and MS degrees in geology from Miami University and The Ohio State University, respectively. He is a Fulbright/American-Scandinavian grantee a Swedish Institute Fellow. During graduate school he focused on Upper Ordovician nautiloid cephalopods of the Boda Limestone in Sweden and completed doctorate studies at the University of Lund, Sweden. He completed studies in Environmental Policy and Management, Environmental Law and Natural Resources Law at the University of Denver, and was an independent restaurant owner. He has twice been designated as an expert witness in federal litigation.He has served in leadership positions (manager, Sr. Manager, Managing Director, Program Director, Senior Fellow) with private sector companies, and with a number of volunteer organizations including The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Board, the San Antonio Military Transformation Task Force, the Association of Defense Communities Private Sector Leadership Council, and is active in his local Lions Club.
