Senior Executive Officer in the Interventional Research team of the Clinical Practice Research Datalink Department

In this project, I am applying a number of machine learning models, using the glmnet and lassosum R packages, to predict smoking behaviour from DNA methylation.

In this research associate position, I searched for and obtained relevant data on smoking and vaping behaviours, to assess the effect of a potential ban on e-cigarette flavours, and create a digital tool to aid policy decisions. During this project I liaised with a number of different stakeholders and groups including smoking charities, research organisations, UoB IT services and Ministers of Parliament (which led to my work being cited by a government report: https://www.gov.uk/government/calls-for-evidence/youth-vaping-call-for-evidence/outcome/youth-vaping-call-for-evidence-analysis).

In this role I created and delivered research methods practical sessions for Psychology undergraduate students. This role has developed my abilities to problem solve in time critical situations. Through teaching I have gained experience of managing and supporting others to get the best work out of them while still allowing them to work independently and take responsibility for their own learning.

In this role I designed a workshop to teach academics how to better conduct research and use the Code Ocean software for analysis and dissemination. This role gave me experience of working to tight deadlines and working with the client to successfully and efficiently achieve their desired goals.

In this internship I conducted causal inference analysis using large-scale genetic and health data to investigate the causal relationships between smoking, caffeine consumption and sleep behaviours. I successfully obtained funding from the Welcome Trust, which gave me experience of applying for grants and communicating the strengths of a project and myself as a candidate.
