Boston University (BU) is funding a project (Project Accelerate) to bring AP Physics to under-served and at-risk students who would otherwise not have this opportunity at their home school. Project Accelerate blends together supportive formal structures from a student’s home school, a private online course designed specifically with the needs of high school students in mind and small group recitation and laboratory experiences. The format of the online component is short on “video professor” and long on engaging students in an interactive environment. In addition, participating students, in groups of 5 or less, participate in a weekly 2-hour recitation on the BU campus facilitated by undergraduate physics majors trained as Learning Assistants. During these weekly on campus sessions, participating high school students engage in research based laboratory explorations, obtain supplemental instruction supporting online content and work on individual learning needs.
