1986 to 1992. The real start date is nearly 10 years earlier. Apollo Marconi unofficially began in 1987 as a sole proprietorship called "Mark Block Cabinets". The year prior, to supplement modest earnings in the music video and documentary business, I had accepted a very kind offer from Winnipeg fine furniture designer/builder Gord MacKenzie to show me the ropes building kitchen cabinets. Between 1986 and 1990 I directed the documentary "Prairie Soul: Black Rhythms from the Heartland" for producer and musician Adrian Peek with federal and provincial money. At the same time, after breaking out on my own and buying some tools, I built 3 custom kitchens around Winnipeg with the help of freelancer and front-man for "The Cheer", Lloyd Peterson. When the kitchen reno economy suffered a hiccup in the late 80s (mostly due to the era's soaring mortgage rates) I branched out into tables and other freestanding pieces. If folks weren't investing in home improvement, perhaps I could keep going by making pieces they could take with them.By 1991 I had started experimenting with new materials. At the J Werier salvage warehouse on Princess I would comb the multiple floors of hardware, furniture parts, store fixtures and more for hours at a time, making up for my lack of an engineering education by studying how things connect to other things. My uncle John Henry calls anything that does that a "gahzinta" (literally "goes-into"). I was also haunting the architecture library at the U of M to take out design and engineering books, and using their photocopier to snag select pages out of Domus and Interni magazines from Italy, just to see what was going on out there (pre-high-speed-internet) in the world of design.By 1992 after hearing the buzz around this amazing Winnipeg metalworker building furniture only the Italians were attempting, I sought out Fred Troost, someone who I came to feel was surely Winnipeg's king of the "gahzintas".

1992 to 1999Fred Troost was for me not just an intuitive joint and connection engineer, but the main contributor to my understanding of when to be the Maker and when to subcontract a job out. On jobs with many parts in multiple materials, the decision is usually made for you by whether or not you have the tools or experience required to do the operation. If the experience was there but not the tool, Fred and I would head over to another shop and pay to access one of their machines for a couple of hours. If neither was handy, a part would get shipped over to another local shop for specialty work, or if built of components, we'd send out an RFQ to source a smaller part of a whole. That was exactly how I was building custom furniture: increasingly adding metal, whether machined, cast, brake-formed or some other process. When metal was NOT the answer, Fred would strongly point me to a cheaper, or stronger or more logical material for the task. This helped cure me of my initial blind infatuation with all things metal, and to understand that each piece was going to be more honest and effective if the palette of materials and methods was left nearly wide open. The Stingray armchair was an example of this, where wood and upholstery turned a single piece of sheet metal into something less frigid than its appearance would suggest. The Nvelope mailbox was not an example of this, as the only thing not stainless steel were the nylon washers in the hinge assembly. The Gazelle table was an answer to the question "Can a table ship in a 6 inch diameter tube?" -- yes, but only if the out of town recipient takes delivery of a custom glass top locally. After all, there are glass shops everywhere, so why ship a heavy glass top if the table holding it up can knock down to nearly nothing and arrive in a tube?

1999 to presentBy the late 90s our Nvelope mailbox customers began requesting address numbers to go with the box, in other words, stainless steel. I soon launched customhousenumbers.com, offering "any font, any size" which before long caught the eye of the highly regarded font purveyors House Industries. In 2000 Andy Cruz got in touch to say House was preparing to release their typeface family Neutraface and needed lettering and numbers produced in stainless for the font's catalog shoot. We duly supplied said parts, and once the shoot was over Andy got back in touch to say they were so taken with our work they wanted to list our website and phone number in the same Neutraface catalog.

Arranger, Fretless Bass, Guitar & Electronic Keyboards & Sequencers

Budding Messiahs (Band), Wendy Isaac (Singer-Songwriter & Spouse)

Winnipeg, Canada & A Short Tour To Nyc In '92

Highlights included opening Winnipeg shows for touring acts like Sarah McLachlan and the Parachute Club in the early 90s, and...• playing the Winnipeg folk festival as a duo (& Brandon's great folk fest numerous times) with Wendy• playing bass for Wendy and her 5 piece band of musical friends on camera for one in a series of half hour CBC TV specials called 'Hot Off the Dock'• performing as a duo while guesting on Murray McLauchlan's Saturday AM CBC radio show 'Swinging On a Star'• doing a friend's wedding ceremony in New York's Central Park (solo classical guitar) and later on bass as a duo with Wendy for the wedding reception in the West Village. To make it legal, Winnipeg Musician's Union's capable Cor Godri filed the proper documents and we entered the US as legit teamsters on a mission to entertain.

Mar 1986 - Aug 1997

Documentary Researcher, Writer, Location Sound, Rough-Cut Editor

Kenya, Swaziland, Tanzania, Somalia, The West Bank

Based in Nairobi, Kenya we made side trips to Swaziland, Tanzania, Somalia & the West Bank to document small scale, community participation based water development projects. The final product was an hour long piece discussing how large scale water development (whether for drinking or irrigation) infrastructure projects frequently fall into disrepair, especially those built with foreign parts and high level engineering methods, and therefore how smaller community based efforts using lower tech has the upper hand, both for longevity and sense of local ownership. The final project was entitled 'The Water of Life', and aired widely in both Canada and the USA. Funding was secured as a combined effort by MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) with CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency). Shot on Kodak 16mm color stock, edited on a Steenbeck flatbed. Location audio: Nagra IV-L with built-in antenna for electronic slating with camera (Burton Buller, director/camera operator devised this system which was ahead of its time for the equipment we were using).
