Born in Auckland New Zealand, Mark completed his Bachelor Degree in Interior Architecture at the School of Architecture and Design, Wellington. Graduating in 1997 he established his own Studio and completed a number of significant small hospitality projects in Wellington, NZ. He relocated to Melbourne and was successful in securing the lead design role at Metier3 Architects for the new University of Melbourne Law School, part of the University Square Development. On completion of that project Mark joined Bates Smart Melbourne in 2003 and became an Associate Director in 2007. He has quickly become an integral member of the senior design team working closely with Director Jeff Copolov.Mark spent many of his early years in the company working overseas on large scale hospitality projects in the UK and Asia. He relocated to London representing Bates Smart on a number of successful bids for large scale mixed use developments culminating in the multibillion dollar City of Dreams project in Macau, where he headed the Bates Smart design team for the main casino.On return Mark was presented with the opportunity to take over the lead interior design role on the award winning Royal Children’s Hospital, the world leading paediatric hospital situated in Royal Park. Mark led a large team and saw this project through to completion. The number of awards given to this project both nationally and internationally remains unparalleled in Bates Smart’s history. Mark recently lead the interior team for the successful bid for the new Australian embassy in Washington DC.Mark has since has been involved in a number of selective healthcare, multi residential and commercial developments.Mark is an active member of the Design Institute of Australia and is currently Bates Smart’s representative in the Committee for Melbourne’s young leadership program the Future Focus Group.
