As the Waterloo, IA, store manager at Midwest Mattress, I act as an owner would. I can't help it: in my mind, it is MY store. Taking ownership has really clarified what's important and not so important for me daily. It dictates how every customer is treated. I've learned to control the factors I can, the best I can. Store cleanliness, merchandise appearance, product knowledge, how customers are treated and following the sales process and more are examples. The uncontrollable factors are not bad or worrisome. Kindness, listening, offering solutions that fit, openness to learning/feedback to get better and better at my craft, and great products are the keys. MY store is growing and MY team and I are seeing a growing number of referrals and repeat customers, which tell us what we are doing is working well. And this is all astounding to a man who most recently joined the world of sales.
