Research: Significant experience of the design, synthesis and applications of functional dye systems including electro-, photo- and thermo- chromic systems. Expertise extends into fluorophores and IR absorbing dye systems. Have explored the synthesis and reactivity of both established and novel heterocyclic systems using a variety of traditional and modern techniques including directed metallations, transition metal-mediated processes. Expertise recently expanded into polymer systems including FRP, ATRP and RAFT. These foregoing activities have generated (as of 2023) ca.100 research papers (heterocyclic systems and photochromic dyes), 6 chapters in major reference works (oxygen and sulfur heterocycles and photochromic dyes), 21 annual review chapters (on oxygen and sulfur hetercyclic ring systems) and ca.25 international patents.
