Joining the Royal Navy in 2001, I have over 20 years military experience in leadership, management, and maritime operations on the global stage. Excelling throughout my career, I have qualified as a Principal Warfare Officer and Specialist Navigator, becoming a Subject Matter Expert in Maritime, Electronic and Celestial Navigation and Maritime Warfare and Operations. I have completed all Command Qualifications and am International Maritime Organization (IMO) STCW II/2 Master Mariner Qualified. Learning agile, I have served in Patrol Boats, Mine Hunters, Frigates and a Landing Platform Helicopter Carrier, conducting nationally and internationally sensitive maritime security, counter narcotic and humanitarian aid operations globally. I have extensive experience relationship building, working routinely with foreign navies such as the US Navy, US Coast Guard, French and Omani Navies as well as government organizations, including the National Crime Agency (NCA), Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and Department for International Development (DFID).Routinely leading multi-disciplinary teams, I have been selected for sea command on multiple occasions, commanding 6 warships and the Faslane Patrol Boat Squadron (FPBS). Lead a team of 75 personnel as a Head of Department, I also Navigated the Fleet Flagship and Helicopter Carrier, HMS OCEAN, managing daily operations, on behalf of the Captain, for over 1000 personnel. As a Coach and Mentor, I have instructed professional courses critical to career development, including representing the Royal Navy at the United States Naval Academy. Also been a lead assessor for Operational Sea Training of UK and foreign warships. I have been extensively involved in policy and process development, training analysis, training design and delivery. Second Mine Countermeasure Squadron Crew 1 - Hm Ships Hurworth, Ledbury, Chiddingfold And Cattistock

Assumed Sea Command of 45 officers and enlisted, to deliver multi-discipline leadership and management to ensure operational capability and successful program delivery. Successfully coached, mentored, and led a junior Team through a complex process of Force Generation and assurance, delivered by the Flag Officer Sea Training and Squadron Staff, to enable the operational deployment of all personnel. Deployed Norway in support of and participation in NATO Exercise TRIDENT JUNCTURE. Overcame significant risk through dynamic management in the face of poor weather and low team capacity, to build the Crew to work more effectively as a collective and individually in readiness for deployed operations. In Jan 2019, deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of the UK Maritime Component Commander and US Fifth Fleet, to deliver maritime security operations during a period of heightened tensions with Iran. Worked extensively with regional partners, delivering maritime training, interoperability, and force integration. Balanced personnel and equipment risk, to ensure ship capability whilst balancing sustainability. Delivered UK Defense Engagement and partnership building. On returning to the UK, Crew 1 joined HMS CHIDDINGFOLD immediately prior to an extensive maintenance and upgrade package. Project Managed budget and delivery, under significant time and resource constraints, overcoming the challenges of C-19 and a national lock down, by successfully working with industry partners, including BAE and QINETIQ, adapting working practices and processes, ensuring safety of personnel and contractors whilst achieving project tasks. Delivered a package in-excess of internal and external stakeholder expectations, despite COVD and budgetary constraints, enabling the ship’s timely forward deployment to the Arabian Gulf with enhanced capability and sustainability for a 4-year mission.

Selected to represent the Royal Navy on exchange to the prestigious United States Naval Academy as a Senior Instructor and Professor for NN310 Advanced Navigation, delivering academic curriculum theory and practical training to 2/C US Navy Midshipmen. Delivering a critical leadership role including curriculum content revision for the Seamanship and Navigation Department, in key mandatory topic areas including Maritime, Electronic and Celestial Navigation to the benefit of future developing US Navy and Marine Corps leaders. Qualified in and subsequently Commanded the 676 and 703 Class of Yard Patrol Craft. Led the planning and execution of Atlantic Afloat Professional Training (LANTPAT) for over 900 US Midshipmen, delivering leadership and maritime training at sea, along the East Coast of the United States. As Officer in Tactical Command, personally responsible for the safety and training over 300 Midshipmen, US Navy Officer and Enlisted at sea. Changed internal management processes and department organization to enhance delivery of safety critical roles. Drove standards of operational safety, including review and revision of Standard Operating Procedures for Yard Patrol Craft. Improved delivery of teaching output for training operations underway. Coached and mentored junior US Navy Officers in navigation and leadership. Developed and delivered professional training and assessment at sea, improving SEANAV department knowledge and experience. Extensive, dynamic risk management in the unforgiving maritime environment.

Hms Ocean

Selected as a leading Specialist Navigator, to navigate HMS OCEAN, the Royal Navy’s Fleet Flagship from 2016-2018. Responsible for the management, direction, and execution of the J3 daily operations, including navigation, aviation and wider tasking for the Ship and 1200+ Ship’s Company. Assumed Bridge Conduct for operations on behalf of the Captain at sea.Worked within the Command Team to plan and manage the Ship’s program, including integration of aviation assets from external organizations, including the British Army (Apache), Royal Air Force (Chinook) and Royal Navy squadrons. Operated with US Navy and Marine Corps assets including MV-22. From 2016-2017, Navigated OCEAN through a 6 month operational tour to the Arabian Gulf, including embarkation of CTF50 Battlestaff. This was the first time a British Battlestaff had command the US Navy CTF50 group. Delivered coalition partnership building and training, alongside Maritime Security Operations in support of US 5th Fleet. Hosted key international engagement, including visits by the UK Prime Minister and high-level diplomats. Deployed in 2017 for a further tour, in support of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2, as the Command platform. However, re-tasked in response to Hurricane Maria to deploy from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean to deliver Humanitarian Disaster Relief Operations where I was a key part of the Command Planning Group, working with external organizations including the FCO and DFID. As Navigator, executed combined aviation and landing craft operations on behalf of the Captain, to deliver aid and personnel ashore. On returning to the UK, prepared OCEAN for sale to the Brazilian Navy, including training nominated Brazilian officer in bridge operations before decommissioning the Ship from the Royal Navy. Had the honor to act as the Officer of the Royal Guard for Her Majesty the Queen.

Joined the internationally recognized, Fleet Operational Sea Training (FOST) organization as a Staff Warfare Officer Navigation (SWO(N)). Led practical collective team training in maritime and electronic navigation, warfare, and seamanship, providing assurance through the Chain of Command that ship teams attain the required standards to deploy globally on operations. Conducted assurance visits Fleet wide, providing 1 to 1 coaching and mentoring in navigational processes and policy ensuring safe management and deliver of operations at sea. Worked to train and build bridge junior teams, providing a baseline knowledge in the execution of standard procedures, to enable the team to develop and advance to the next level of training. Provision of staff assurance and assessment of national and international units conducting Basic Operational Sea Training. Oversaw live training of safety critical evolutions including Replenishment at Sea and Aviation Operations. Delivered and mentored maritime warfare skills, through facilitation of scenario-based live training. Provided critical feedback to Command as to team strengths and weaknesses, with a view to drive consistent improvement in performance and capability. Led Royal Navy navigation policy and procedure review and revision, including implementation of new processes designed to monitor team training standards.

Hms Somerset

Qualifying as a Principle Warfare Officer, assumed the role of Head of the Warfare Department in HMS SOMERSET, leading a team of 75 officers and enlisted personnel. Responsible for the short to medium term program management for the ship, including delivery of daily operations planning and execution on behalf of the Captain. Liaised extensively with internal and external stakeholders, managing training delivery to increase operational capability. Extensive technical engagement, working with both mechanical and electronic engineers to deliver equipment trials and testing to prove the ship’s defensive and offensive capabilities, including integration of the newly installed 997 Medium Air Search Radar system. Worked closely within the Command Team to respond to and deliver short notice tasking, including Towed Array Patrol operations in support of the UK’s Continuous At Sea Nuclear Deterrent. Worked with the National Crime Agency and Boarder Force to successfully plan and execute counter narcotics operations, with the interception and detention of the MV HAMAL. With the Navy’s formal adoption of Information Management principles, assumed the role as Information Management Officer, leading development and implementation of the ship’s IM strategy, policy, and training. Worked extensively to manage and implement UK legal legislation and Royal Navy security policy. Responsible to the Commanding Officer for departmental and junior Warfare Officer coaching and mentoring to achieve career progression benchmarks.

The Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Maritime) - or ICSC(M) - is designed to equip maritime officers and warrant officers with the staff skills, critical thinking and operational awareness to succeed in the primary and secondary stages of their careers. ICSC(M) is delivered by the Royal Navy Division and is an integral part of the Defence Academy’s Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC).As modern warfare is continually evolving, so is ICSC(M) with an enhanced focus on disruptive and innovative thinking, multi-domain operation, contemporary security issues and specific business skills.ICSC(M) is a full-time 10-week course that implements hybrid learning, with a mixture of residential, remote and digital learning. Selected for Sea Command of HMS DASHER and the Faslane Patrol Boat Squadron, to deliver Military Aid to Civil Powers (MAC(P)) tasking in support of Maritime Security Operations to the UK’s Nuclear Deterrent. Built strong working relationships with external organizations, including 43 Commando of the Royal Marines, Strathclyde Police Force and the Ministry of Defense Policy. Worked extensively with multiple stakeholders involved in OPERATION RELENTLESS and the Nuclear Deterrent. Commanded a Team of 12 personnel, whilst directing wider task group operations including Royal Marine assets and working in conjunction with civil police underway on the River Clyde. As Commanding Officer, personally managed the career and wellbeing of junior officers and enlisted. Led a multi-discipline Team to deliver operational capability and to improve effectiveness and efficiency within the Squadron. Coached and mentored and led training for junior personnel.Project managed the hull swap of the HM Ships DASHER and PURSUER with TRACKER and RAIDER, managing time and budgetary constraints to improve overall Squadron capability and efficiency for security operations. Role culminated in assuming Command of the Faslane Patrol Boat Squadron for over 6 months.
