About Mark Hilliard Wilson

Mark Hilliard Wilson is an active performer, teacher, and developer of Guitar Orchestra. Writing, arranging and exploring new venues for the performance of classical music has led to over 200 works Wilson has written or arranged, of which 15 works for Guitar orchestra can be found published on Seconda Prattica. Wilson applies his interpersonal skills and broad knowledge of history, music and cultures around the world to address contemporary issues in the concerts he programs. How can classical music address issues of those unhoused, or gun violence, or how social media and technology are rapidly affecting our ways of communicating and what we communicate? Curating concerts that address these issues, raising awareness of means to address, or educate audiences about the circumstances that led to how quickly and easily people can find themselves in this position, while at the same time creating space to consider this through the lens of our common humanity. At the turn of the century, Wilson saw a need for classical guitarists to address fundamental elements of ensemble playing, and sometimes even the components of processing how music is made. Wilson created the Guitar Orchestra of Seattle to address these concerns and more while focusing on community and having fun. Over the last 20 years Wilson has toured North America teaching guitar ensemble workshops in Winnipeg, Canada to over 100 at risk students, and preparing them to share varied programs featuring, his own compositions, as well as classical composers and even excellent transcriptions of Johnny Cash, Linkin Park and Aerosmith. Wilson was commissioned by Guitar Fest West at Mount Royal College in Calgary to premier numerous works for Guitar Orchestra. This involved directing two hour rehearsals for 5 days with a concert at the end of the week. In order to survive in the field of music, one must develop a diverse set of skills and evolve these tools at the rapid pace the world is changing. Fortunately, many of the tools used in learning a piece of music are highly applicable to working in the modern work environment. One of the most important skills is listening, and understanding what needs to be addressed, whether teaching a student, or working with a client for a project or working with fellow musicians or colleagues, listening is paramount to success. Navigating a complex piece of music with more than one melody, and intricate rhythms is another intersection where attention to detail is crucial for understanding problems and opportunities presented.

  • Saint James Cathedral
    Cathedral Guitarist
Saint James Cathedral Oct 2006 - Present
    Seattle, Washington
In March of 2020 Governor Inslee issued a "Stay Home" order and limited gatherings in public. This dramatically effected the services at St James. After some discussion between St James and I, we decided to embark on a bold new plan to address the needs of the community with the resources available by featuring a Musical Prayer concert. Building programs around themes such as Joy, Justice and Peace or Patience, I have addressed contemporary events, such as the Black Lives Matter protests in the summer of 2020, or concerns over Climate Change with narratives told in music. Starting with the themes in the liturgical calendar and curating pieces that address the given theme along with contemporary events has led to transcriptions of "Lift Every Voice" the African American national anthem, for the Justice and Peace program. I chose excerpts from Orfeo and Euridice by WK Gluck for a program obliquely referring to the first fires at the end of the summer along with fire and brimstone and trials, about going to Hades and back. Good programing is about allowing space for the listener to explore the ideas suggested in the music and explore our commonality.Normally, I perform a short set of music conducive to meditation and prayer after Mass and before Taize every Friday from 6 to 6:30 in the Cathedral Sanctuary or the Chapel. I draw upon the deep well of great composers from the Middle Ages to the present with attention to finding music that reflects that changes of seasons and awareness of the liturgy. I also play form weddings, welcome back, and have an annual concert at the end of the summer.
  • The Rosewood Guitar

  • Bellevue College
    Adjunct Instructor
    Bellevue College Sep 2005 - Aug 2015
    Bellevue, Washington, United States
In 2005 I was hired to develop a Class Guitar curriculum. Initially it was set up to be one class a quarter, with a cap of 25 students, but after getting an enrollment of 45 students for the first class it seemed that creating two classes would better serve the students. I began in fall of 2005 and by the spring quarter of that year we added an intermediate class. At its height we had three beginning classes one intermediate and a chamber ensemble. Each quarter would conclude with a performance, involving between 50 and 75 students, a brief set of trios and quartets from the chamber group and solos from the students taking individual lessons. The curriculum I developed taught the rudiments of music in reading, and rhythms, chords with two scales and ensemble games. My focus was not so much to teach an individual piece but the tools to teach themselves, while also addressing working with other people and rocking out. I taught Rock history course for 8 years, along with a music appreciation (classical music survey course with rudiments of theory) and briefly taught a jazz history and world music survey course. I also taught an intro to music theory for one quarter. I used online teaching tools of Bb Vista until we transitioned to Canvas. This involved, setting up online quizzes, a place to share video lectures or coaching, and a 24 hours resource for posting reading and reference materials
  • Whatcom Community College
    Adjunct Instructor
Whatcom Community College Sep 1987 - Aug 1989
    Bellingham, Washington, United States
I was hired in 1987 to teach individual lessons to students. I had a small studio of 5 students a week that worked on rudiments of the classical guitar
