About Mark Albers

With an extensive experience in product and service engineering in the PV and Battery Storage industries, I am a passionate problem solver that is very adept at architecting system level solutions. My electrical engineering foundation has allowed me to work as a leader in hardware development, data engineering, project design, and service engineering. I focus on empowering the people I managed to do their best and am highly analytical and data driven in my decision making, which has earned me life-long respect from those I have managed. At Tesla, I was responsible for identifying issues with commercial and utility scale batteries installed at customer sites, resolving the issues, and preventing them from reoccurring for a rapidly growing install base (~300MWh to ~2GWh). I accomplished this by strategically attacking the problems, building a strong multi-disciplinary team, automating the detection, notification, and tracking of issues, and tightly collaborating with other teams. At SunPower, I gained many years of experience with designing and building new PV Systems, identifying and resolving issues while operating them, and developing new products for utility scale systems. I lead the investigation and resolution of industry shaping failure modes that caused fires, built new teams, and explored the development of innovative products to reduce the system cost. Going forward I aim to work with companies developing new products and ideas for the Renewables Industry. I am actively seeking engineering leadership roles focused on system level design and/or problem solving.

    Tesla Oct 2017 - Oct 2020
    Austin, Texas, Us
    • Managed the commissioning of the first Megapacks (shipping container sized battery system) and identification of design improvements required for the product launch.• Maintained 99+% availability on a 105MW front-of-the-meter storage asset, the world’s largest battery at the time, allowing it to stabilize grid disturbances, provide frequency support, and auto-bid into the energy markets.• Managed the creation and execution of the urgent response procedures for discharging and removing critically damaged Lithium Ion battery modules. Deployed firmware changes to enable early detection of high-risk failure modes and to enable remote shutdown of vulnerable modules.• Led the development of an automated, server-side alarm system that monitored worldwide equipment for time sensitive conditions. Alarms were prioritized based on the required response time and sent to on-call engineers. Urgent conditions were reported within 15 minutes.• Architected an automated approval and deployment process for updating software on customers’ battery systems allowing 120,000 devices across 550 installations to be updated in 30% of the time using less people.• Established a process for investigating and tracking the root of causes of field failures. Reduced the failure rate in one critical battery sub-system by 5X resulting in improved system availability for customers.• Launched a customer facing ticketing system and computerized technical support hotline to process customer requests. Processed 110 requests per week within 2 years of inception.• Grew the Product Engineering team from 3 people to 12 direct and 11 indirect team members, globally.
  • Sunpower Corporation
    Utility Module Electronics Engineering Manager
    Sunpower Corporation Nov 2015 - Sep 2017
    Richmond, California, Us
Directed development of a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) with a 25 year design life and robust enough to withstand high temperatures and deep thermal cycles when integrated into a photovoltaic (PV) module junction box. Shrank the size of the assembly by 60%, revised the design to withstand 6kV surges, and lowered the cost by 60% to hit the target cost. Designed a custom, serviceable junction box enclosure (using rapid prototyping techniques) that could passively dissipate 6W through a plastic box with a thermal budget of 70C. Specified PCBA manufacturing test equipment and coordinated manufacturing of first 25,000 units. Architected the next generation design for a string-stretching device that is compatible with 1500V PV systems and reduces the cost by an additional 50%.
  • Sunpower Corporation
    Electrical Systems Engineering Manager
    Sunpower Corporation Jun 2013 - Nov 2015
    Richmond, California, Us
    • Created the Electrical Systems Engineering Team and grew it to 4 positions in 2.5 years.• Architected and oversaw the development of a ground fault protection retrofit solution for existing PV systems that increased detection sensitivity by 50X. Released solution in phases to expedite deployment with 4 significant enhancements in 2 years. Designed, prototyped, tested and launched production of an external solution in 3 weeks. Upgraded 327 inverters at 147 sites in 2 years. Detected 24 ground faults, saving $12.75M in repairs and production losses.• Analyzed and published the risk of 13 electrical faults and the effectiveness of 20 mitigation methods in ground mounted PV systems using a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). • Conducted and supervised field investigations and failure analysis of equipment failures using the 8D methodology.• Collected concerns from VIP customers affected by high impact field failures. Lead root cause investigation of failures and development of corrective action plans. Presented root cause findings and recommended corrective actions to customers. Provided customers with confidence to resume operation of their PV systems and to purchase additional SunPower systems.• Established a system for field technicians to request assistance from Engineering on a prioritized basis.
