After three years of investment banking, I was looking to be more entrepreneurial and formed a partnership with two industry veterans that had been acquiring businesses in the lower middle market since 1985. In addition to establishing a brand, reputation, and organization that has scaled to over $1B of assets under management, I am most proud of identifying the opportunity to innovate within the highly regulated SBIC industry. At the time all SBIC funds were debt funds investing in loan products. After researching the regulations, I discovered a creative transaction structure that allowed us to take majority control equity positions as a licensed SBIC fund. KLH Capital, LP was the pioneer and today more than 100 private equity funds have followed our precedent.

Although the typical analyst program is only two years long, I was asked to stay for a third year as an associate on both buy-side and sell-side capital market transactions. I was staffed on IPOs, public debt and equity offerings, and worked closely with large real estate private equity funds and public REITs.I found this job opportunity by going to the University of Virginia's career fair and posing as a UVA student because investment banks do not recruit from my university. I was transparent about my education and the recruiter appreciated the hustle and unorthodox approach.
