I provide pig production consultancy services, farm audits, training, and business reviews to the global pig industry. A particular focus of this work has been helping clients, predominantly in Europe, Canada and Eastern Europe with the establishment, implementation, operation and training of staff to run nucleus, multiplication and closed herd breeding programmes, and to optimise production from their existing facilities.

I had full responsibility for the co-ordination, planning and implementation activities of the largest ever pig export order (45,000 animals) to a client in Russia. This involved all isolation events, health checks, veterinary monitoring, laboratory results, invoicing, letters of credit, export applications, route plans, transport, customs documentation, supplier and customer liaison. I accompanied all exports from Europe to the clients facilities in Russia to ensure the animals arrived on schedule and conclude all shipment and legal documentation. Negotiation and monitoring of project supplier costs resulted in a 26% reduction.

Initially I was responsible for the implementation of the JSR Healthbred breeding programme, including the integration and merger of the Newsham and JSR breeding lines and the change of pig recording system. I then took on responsibility for the management of the company health monitoring scheme, which covered over 75 production sites throughout the UK, co-ordination of all AI boar intakes into 8 AI centres, including selection and statutory testing requirements. In addition, I also managed all export and import activities requiring a letter of credit.

I was responsible for the implementation of the company’s genetic breeding programme and 12 nucleus production sites. This included the organisation and implementation of hysterectomy, MEW and snatch farrowing programmes to facilitate the transfer of high health genetics, and organisation of the project to Computer Tomography (CT) scan the first pigs in the UK. I was a member of the team that developed a specialised genetic management programme for the business, providing a strong input on system development, report design and had responsibility for training, support and one data inputter. In addition, I was also influential in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), company manuals and customer support literature.

Involved with all aspects of the day-to-day running of the company’s main R & D facility, show farm and genetic nucleus unit.
