The Correctional Corporal supervises offenders in work, living, and recreation situations. Incumbents protect staff and offenders through non-invasive special tactics or by force, if necessary.As a lead-worker, incumbents will assist in unit operations to ensure that all unit documentation and security procedures are adhered to. Incumbents are responsible for training employees, providing guidance, assigning work, monitoring employee performance, and providing staff feedback. Incumbents have input into performance evaluations, provide back up to unit Sergeants, and may provide shift commander coverage. Some positions may participate in specialized treatment programs and perform lead-work responsibilities of security staff in the delivery and support of treatment services.As a program technician, a major part of the incumbent’s job is to participate in individualized treatment programs which habilitate offenders through substance abuse treatment, cognitive behavioral and social learning methodologies, program delivery, and offender team case management. Incumbents serve as a member of the program team and a participant on a case management team. Responsibilities may include: intake, screening, and orientation of individuals into a habilitative program; explaining expectations and consequences; assisting in the development of treatment plans; promoting individual change and modeling communication and interpersonal skills. The Correctional Corporal provides input for team norms, rules, and guidelines as well as explains risk management concepts and techniques to team members. Incumbents participate in the program process applying customized program plans including coordination and facilitation of program activities and education. Incumbents document observations including progress or lapses, apply treatment team sanctions and incentives, and serve as the interface between risk control and risk reduction.
