Through interactions between transferrin receptors 1 and 2, transferrin, and HFE, our liver hepatocytes are able to sense circulating iron levels. This sensing goes awry in one of the most common genetic disorders, hereditary hemochromatosis, which leads to chronic iron overload. I seek to elucidate the nature of these critical protein-protein interactions to build a more complete picture of the iron sensing process.
