About Mark Larson

As a motivated and dedicated mechanical engineering student, I thrive in collaborative and competitive environments. I am a Clemson University sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering. My passion for engineering and improving people's quality of life led me to join Clemson Engineers for Developing Communities, where I have worked on the Emergency Origami Shelter Team as well as the Water from Air team.During my first summer internship with Rockford Toolcraft Inc., I gained experience with CAD drawings, produced many parts using many different methods, and conducted thorough quality checks to ensure precision and accuracy. Last summer I was a mechanical engineering intern at Commercial Metals Company (CMC). Over the summer I was given four design projects to lead. On each of the projects I would read existing drawings, field verify measurements, communicate with vendors and other CMC departments, design and draft a solution, and finally contract out the fabrication and installation. In addition to my engineering experience, I have also worked for the Rockford Park District as a therapeutic recreation program assistant, where I facilitated inclusive and engaging summer camp experiences for children with disabilities. As I continue to develop my mechanical engineering skills, I plan to eventually work in the aerospace or defense industry, where I can use my mechanical engineering and computer science knowledge to develop new technologies.

I was a member of the Emergency Origami Shelter Project. The goal of this project is to create an emergency shelter that can be deployed after a natural disaster. This shelter needs to be safe, easy to deploy, long lasting, and cost effective compared to the current market. As a member of this team I have:Preformed extensive research on current emergency shelter options and preformed a "SWOT" analysis on our design. Produced numerous prototypes for testing. Created a centralized excel sheet for all of our testing data as well as assisted in the production and testing of several small scale shelter prototypes.Additionally, I was on the Water from Air team for one semester where I researched different hygroscopic materials and their applications.
  • Commercial Metals Company
    Mechanical Engineering Intern
Commercial Metals Company May 2023 - Aug 2023
    Cayce, South Carolina, United States
Learned the steel-making process from obtaining scrap to producing rebar and merchant products.Learned about structural steel shapes and sizes, and how to perform deflection and bending stress calculations for steel designs. Utilized existing drawings and field measuring tools to create 3-D models of existing areas prior to designing a solution. Designed, drafted, and contracted out a redesign of a billet transfer car for improved safety of workers. In the design thermal expansion and buckling were especially taken into consideration. Designed, drafted, and contracted out a walkway connecting two existing platforms. In this design, the deflection of the walkway as well as the placement of the walkway relative to the surrounding machinery were especially taken into consideration. Laid out a plan to add an emergency egress from a crane cab. This design was unique because I had to take into account how two buildings can move independently to ensure a safe design. Assessed the contact water system and laid out a series of steps to be taken to improve the water quality.Collaborated with mechanical and maintenance engineers to ensure each project would be successful.
  • Rockford Toolcraft Inc
    Intern
Rockford Toolcraft Inc Jun 2022 - Aug 2022
    Rockford, Illinois, United States
Repaired broken die pieces both in and out of the presses. Outside of the presses I helped to disassemble the die, grind down shims for it, and reassemble it. Inside of the presses I assisted in replacing broken punches and adding or removing shims from the die.Checked countless parts to ensure they were being produced within tolerance. To do this I used micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, a coordinate-measuring-machine, and many other measuring tools.Operated laser cutting machines, and learned how the lasers were programed. I also learned about efficiency during the laser cutting process.Produced parts using die presses.Worked with welders to weld parts in the production process.Completed more than 250 hours of work on the shop floor and a classroom component practicing soft skills as well as basics in reading CAD Drawings.
