As Group Financial controller Mark's responsibilities were:-▪ Prepare timely monthly Management Accounts and a monthly Financial Analysis Report of all the companies with trend analysis against previous year and budget. This is presented to the Board of Directors on a monthly basis;▪ Provide Management with a clear understating of the financial performance and the financial effects and implications of business plans and strategies; ▪ Prepare an Annual forecast budget for the entire group which is presented to the Board of Directors at year end for review and subsequent revision;▪ Maintain on a monthly basis a rolling forecast budget;▪ Liaise with various Banks on all banking requirements and services;▪ Ensure that all returns and statutory returns are submitted on time;▪ Manage and monitor the Inventory Control Department;▪ Manage the Finance and Administration department in an organised and efficient manner;▪ Ensure the company’s policies and procedures are compliant with good practice and monitor these for adherence;▪ Optimize the handling of cash and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash position;▪ Provide coaching and monitoring to all subordinates in the optimization of their potential;▪ Responsible for enforcing Internal controls and introducing new ones;▪ Preparing feasibility studies for Top Management;▪ Ensure that all Credit Procedures are being followed and make recommendations on new credit agreements;▪ Preparing Analysis reports upon request by Top Management, in relation to sales, margins, expenses, overtime etc. These reports with appropriate recommendations are forwarded to Top Management for review;▪ Liaise with the Companies software providers for any operational shortcomings in conjunction with the staff responsible for IT;▪ Liaise with Purchasing Department and follow up any problems in relations to payments, delivery, credit notes etc;▪ Assists auditors in connection with interim and year audit;

Mark joined the National Audit office after coming back from Dubai. Mark was responsible for the compilation and implementation of the Business Plan, preparing write-ups for the annual audit report and for managing audit team. Also responsible to provide guidance to audit team, coordinating their work, evaluating results, and assisting them with solving problems.

United Arab Emirates

In 2006 Mark embraced a different challenge and went to work in Dubai (UAE). In Dubai, Mark joined Abela and Co. LLC, a catering company which was established in Dubai in 1967, and is market leader in the food service management sector. As Finance Controller, Mark managed a team of 14 staff and was responsible for each finance aspect of the company. The company employs about 3000 employees. Mark's responsibilities included:-▪ Manage the financial interests of the company through control of cash flow, verification and validation of budgets, performance analyses and management information reports▪ Analyse financial results and provide the management with a clear understanding of the financial performance and the financial effects / implications of business plans and strategies▪ Ensure that all administrative operations of the department are carried out systematically and effectively▪ Ensure the company’s policies and procedures are compliant with good practice and monitor these for adherence▪ Optimize the handling of cash and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash position▪ Provide coaching and monitoring to all subordinates in the optimization of their potential▪ Responsible for enforcing internal controls and introducing new IT systems▪ Preparing feasibility studies for Top Management▪ Liaise with HR department in setting policies for the whole company▪ Assists auditors in connection with interim and year audit▪ Liaise and negotiate with Bankers▪ Attend at AGM and Board meetings

Following his audit experience Mark decided to join the Tax compliance Unit to enhance his expertise in the VAT and tax sectors. His responsibilities included:-▪ Undertaking investigations and other assignments related to tax evasion and avoidance in respect of VAT, Income Tax and Customs as well as Social Security Fraud;▪ Using the latest taxation avoidance and evasion audit methodologies;▪ Ensuring that investigations and assignments are conducted within the agreed time-frames and to the appropriate quality level;▪ The enforcement of adopted work practices and quality control standards and guidelines;▪ Processing objections filed by taxpayers following TCU tax investigations▪ The compilation of Tax audit report;▪ Attended various training programmes on the interpretation and practical implementation of the current Maltese VAT legislation organized by the EU pre-accession unit tax managers

Mark joined PricewaterhouseCoopers International audit firm in 1999 as an audit senior in the audit department. During the first year Mark performed audit and consultancy services of various companies.Mark was involved in the compilation of financial statements in accordance with International Accounting Standards and local legislation, reporting on internal control systems, preparing tax computations and delivering accounting services;The following year Mark was seconded to PricewaterhouseCoopers, Milan (Italy ) for a period of seven months. During his secondment in Italy Mark performed the following services:- Completed and supervised a wide range of complex audits to tight deadlines. Applied both Italian and U.K. accounting standards Learned Italian accounting systems and financial statement requirements Ensured compliance with reporting requirements of parent company Performed Due diligence assignmentsMark was promoted audit supervisor on his return from Italy. In October 2001 Mark was seconded to PricewaterhouseCoopers, Milton Keynes (UK). Mark performed audit assurance services in Milton Keynes and in Birmingham for a period of six months.During his secondment in Milton Keynes Mark was responsible for audit planning, audit fieldwork, supervision of audit fieldwork conducted by staff under his direction, and for the compilation of audit reports and management letters for various clients in different sectors.

Mark joined KPMG in 1997 as an audit assistant in the audit department. During his employment with KPMG, Mark has been responsible for the performance of audit and other related services. He has been involved in the compilation of financial statements in accordance with International Accounting Standards and local legislation, reporting on internal control systems, preparing tax computations and delivering accounting services. Mark has been involved for a short period on specialised areas including the liquidation process for different companies and performance of audits of offshore and International trading companies.
