As a Biomedical Scientist within the Cellular Pathology Laboratory I am responsible for performing a range of specialist, practical tasks including but not excluded to, BMS specimen dissection, microtomy, embedding, special stains, immunohistochemistry and one step nucleic acid amplification (OSNA). I am responsible at a quality assurance level for assessing all slides generated through cellular pathology techniques. Operation of specialist laboratory equipment, including immunohistochemistry analysers and automated embedder. I perform tasks across the two sites of The Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and The Royal Hampshire County Hospital.

My role as a Biomedical Scientist was spread over two site; the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and the Supra-Regional Assay Service (SAS) for metabolic bone markers, based at the University of East Anglia. As the designated SAS Biomedical Scientist, I was required to run metabolic bone immunoassays. I either perform these SAS assays on the automated immunoassay analyser, or manually. In addition to running the assays, I was responsible for the logistics of managing samples and reagents and communicating with staff over the two sites, to ensure effective performance of assays.

As a Biomedical Scientist I was responsible for the running of clinical tests through the operation of automated analysers in a busy biochemistry department. Whilst positioned within the Endocrinology and Immunology section, I subsequently performed assays investigating a number of steroid hormones, autoimmune antibodies, tumor markers and other related analytes. The operation of the highly technical laboratory machinery required the preparation and disposal of hazardous materials, as well as quality control, trouble shooting and problem solving on a daily bases.

As a Biomedical Scientist support worker within specimen reception, this role required the performance of essential tasks, to ensure timely turnover of samples through the laboratory. My main duties included; accurately booking in a comprehensive range of patient samples, along with patient identifiers and preparing samples for processing by Biomedical Scientists.

My key responsibilities within the Cellular Pathology department were those of a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist. I would scribe for Consultants and senior Biomedical staff, assisting them during specimen dissection. I would subsequently operate automatic tissue processors, before going on to embed tissues in paraffin wax. I was responsible for operating microtomes, including cryostats, encompassing the assessment and preparation of a range of tissues. I was responsible for the performing of specialist histopathological stains on a daily bases. From operating staining machines for routine Haematoxylin and Eosin, to performing manual specialist staining. I also performed tasks within the Immunohistochemistry and in situ Hybridisation department.The laboratory also included Electron Microscopy, Paediatrics, and a Neuropathology departments and participation in the Moh's clinic. I was subsequently able to gain experience in each of these disciplines.
