Having spent a huge chunk of my career at the bedside, it made me more aware of how important the aspects of asepsis and sterility is in the practice of nursing. Asepsis does not merely encompass the profession alone but our way of life. Having been given this opportunity to further explore the field of infection control, the avenues for improvement in the practice of nursing could never be overstated. We focus more on the speed and the quantity of patients we take care of that we take for granted the basis of safety. Safety in the sense of protecting our clients from nosocomial acquired infections. Studies have suggested that we if do not revise or draw more attention to the importance of infection control, more lives would be at risk.

I was hired to be both an operating room nurse and an post anesthesia care nurse, the latter being my main focus of work. This hospital was fairly new when it opened and it certainly played a huge role in making me aware of the importance of my current position.

My main area of assignment was in the General Surgery Wards. We cater to a variety of pre and post surgical patients and also to chest and neuro-surgical trauma cases. These cases could either be of adult or pediatric category.
