Seconded to Galsgow as part of a team to address Ofgem's requitrements under The Information & Incentives Project, which dealt with the accuracy, consistency of network performance data reported to them under condition 9 (England and Wales) and condition 6 (Scotland).My duties were to project manage two of the work streams, Disaggregated Data and Medium Term Performance. For disaggregated data I was responsible for providing a method/procedure for obtaining the source data for disaggregation reporting and to set in place a system to determine the number and duration of interruptions to supplies at a disaggregated level. For medium term performance, I had to provide modified systems to allow Power Systems to report information to the regulator on the performance of specific company assets, e.g. transformers, overhead lines etc. and the reliability of our network.

As a Project Manager I was involved in the detailed design and management of a portfolio of 132kV projects involving refurbishment, new supplies, generation connections and reinforcement works, ensuring that the best technical and economic practices were employed.I liaised with the Engineering Design group of SD&C and commented on their System Construction Authorisation documents for capital expenditure schemes.I liaised with Scottish Power Procurement and wrote the detailed specifications for the enquiry documents, carried out tender adjudication’s and produced tender assessment reports and purchasing authority requests for contract placements.Part of my duties were to visit suppliers and witness type and routine testing of plant and equipment and carry out design review meetings to ensure that the equipment being provided met with current Scottish Power requirements and E.A. standards.I gained experience with132kV substation construction, 132kV overhead line construction works together with 132kV underground cable installation works, all of which involve detailed negotiations and discussion regarding the acquisition of Wayleaves and consents from land owners, local authorities and government departments.I was responsible for ensuring that the projects under my control are all completed to defined requirements and within specified budgets and time scales.

These often involved discussions with landowners to obtain routes for overhead line, underground cables, transformer locations and acquisition of wayleaves. Other duties included service alterations, refurbishment works and diversions. I also carried out high/low voltage fault location and repair, commissioning of new secondary substations involving pressure testing and protection testing/commissioning. I also carried out standby as part of my normal duties.

Here my duties included investigation of illegal abstraction of electricity and executing warrants for disconnection. Here I gained valuable experience with regard to customer relations and achieve extra ordinary customer care.Following that I moved to LIster drive for another 12 months where I took a post in the cusatomer accunts department where some of my responsibilities were to carry out insitu testing of metering equipment (domestic and small commercial) for accuracy. I also inspected points of supply, checked load readings and advised customers on their accounts.I then was successful in securing a postion with the companys engineering training scheme working in various district operational and planning sections, Head Office functions and the Central Field Unit. I also attended a number of engineering related courses at our Hoylake training centre, finally taking up a permananent post as an operational engineer in Crewe in 1989.
