About Mark Macaskill
I am a Research Fellow and Lecturer in cardiovascular science, investigating the processes which underpin maladaptive remodelling in the heart following myocardial infarction, and in blood vessels during atherosclerosis. I investigate these molecular and cellular processes through the application of novel molecular imaging and analysis approaches utilising Positron Emission Tomography (PET). The goal of my research is to develop a better understanding of the mechanisms which drive poorer outcomes in cardiovascular disease, and ultimately develop novel therapeutic strategies and prognostic tools to reduce the impact of maladaptive remodelling. I mainly specialise in preclinical and translational research; although, I have a broad range of experience ranging from basic science all the way to clinical studies. Currently, my research explores the role of the alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor pathway during pathology induced remodelling across the cardiovascular system.I gained my PhD in Vascular Biology and Pharmacology from the University of Strathclyde in 2014 before moving to the University of Edinburgh to specialise in preclinical PET imaging. While my role is mainly research focussed, I teach Cardiovascular Imaging and Pharmacology and at an undergraduate level, as well as train and supervise MSc and PhD students.
