I have enjoyed a design career across five decades and two countries, Ireland and Australia. Starting in the advertising world during the early 80’s in Dublin under the creative direction of the brilliant Dutch advertising man, Cor Klaasen. I discovered three books, ‘Herb Lubalin: Art director, Graphic Designer and Typographer’ by Gertrude Snyder & Alan Peclovick, ‘Ogilvy on Advertising’ and Ed Gold’s ‘The business of Graphic Design’. These books alongside a very special friend helped convince me to start my first design studio ‘Mark 1 Design’. Throughout the five decades, I met and worked with extraordinary creative professionals, highly skilled suppliers and many very interesting people in business. These thought provoking people have all contributed to my design experiences and made it possible for me to build successful design businesses exposing me to new and different aspects of design and the strategies required to achieve successful outcomes on multidisciplinary projects. Creative projects were designed, developed and delivered to large global organisations as well as small niche businesses. In Australia, these projects were created while working at Marksmann Communications, MacWhite & Associates and eBrands.Today, I work solely for myself, on personal projects in a superlative studio under the train tracks approaching the Sydney harbour bridge. Projects which will help my children and grand children understand how Granny and Grandpa live our lives today and who we are. Like many, I am happy leaving my Mark, whatever that might be.
