Profile bio

About Mark Marsh

A varied career starting with working for car makers to simulate and analyse test track behaviour (bouncing cars up and down), segueing into application design and development including leading a small team of developers and then moving to KPMG to start consultancy. From there I was seduced into the (then new) field of big data working on mainly telecom and retail projects - latterly designing analytic systems for high velocity analytics of mobile phone data.More recently, I've returned to product development and design where I enjoy being able to take peoples ideas and help bring them to life.

Listed skills include Solution Architecture, It Strategy, Technical Architecture, Enterprise Architecture, and 9 others.

Kognitio

Kognitio produce a massively parallel in-memory database.Responsibilities:• Proof of concept exercises• Implementation • Product development• • Containerisation• • Cloud platform integration (AWS, GCP and Azure)• • Hadoop filesystem integration• Competitive and complementary product evaluationThere are massive changes happening to the computing industry with the move to the cloud and containerisation. There are also some things that are standing the test of time like the use of SQL for analytics. Kognitio spans both sides of this with an enterprise grade SQL implementation that can be deployed on anything from off the shelf Linux boxes to the latest container platforms. Integrating with a wide variety of platforms is challenging but capabilities such as the ability to mirror a Hive or Glue table in memory with two SQL statements allow customers to concentrate on finding the value in the data rather than writing code.

Principal Technical Consultant

Anderson Harvy was a small consultancy specialising in large and / or complex data sets such as mobile phone signalling data. The engagements typically covered the full data lifecycle from ETL to visualisation and encompassed both purely analytical work and software development.Over the last five years one of my main roles was technical architect and developer of a mobile phone signalling analysis product that takes complex network probe data and transforms it into a form that the wider business (marketing, customer service etc) is comfortable using. The product provides detail above, at and below call level and this allows the business users to gain new high level insights into network performance and also break them down to see how this affects customer experience on an individual level.. The design was lead by the requirements of the customer facing business but we also provide facilities to drill down into the underlying data so that network engineers can start off with a high level problem and drill down to the underlying signals to identify the root cause. The product is in production at Vodafone in Ireland and Turkcell in Turkey. I've also ported it to Hadoop using a Java compatibility layer that I developed to allow the same analysis code to run unchanged on either Teradata, Hadoop or as a plain Java process for smaller operators. Other engagements at Anderson Harvy included: - C++ UDF development for Teradata - Architecture review for a leading loyalty cards MI system. - Web log analysis for M&S and the BBC. - CRM architecture design for Haymarket publications. - Various data analysis projects for T-Mobile UK, Orange UK, Vodafone NL, Telefonica CZ. - Fixed line telecoms analysis including price list planning, least cost routing, network optimisation, revenue assurance and wholesale billing system provision at Torch, Kingston, Easynet, Sky and TalkTalk.

May 2000 - Aug 2015

Technical Consultant

Contracting

Pre-sales consultant for White Cross (now Kognitio) performing proof of concepts and working within customer organisations.Mercury (fixed line telecoms) analysing the financial impact of proposed tariffs.Manweb (electricity utility) analysing shop usage patterns to minimise the impact of shop (payment point) closures on customers. We used the Kognitio database and ArcView GIS in conjunction with customer behavioral and demographic data to determine the impact of closing each shop which was then used by the business to choose which to close resulting in a much smaller customer reaction to the closures than expected. Jewsons (retail) basket analysis etc.Torch / Kingston communications (fixed line telecoms) analysis, optimisation of call charging, revenue assurance and development of a wholesale billing system. I started at Torch in a pre-sales role for Kognitio but stayed on when they purchased a database. In the course of doing the general analytics they required, it became apparent that their wholesale billing system was incapable of providing the level of data required and I ended up writing a new billing and reconciliation system for them.I also worked at Vicorp in Windsor where I developed the international credit synchronisation subsystem for a calling card platform.
