I have been working as an ecologist for over 20 years. I started as a self-employed consultant ecologist and worked on habitat conservation and monitoring projects for NPWS like the Native Woodland Survey and Raised Bog Ecotope Monitoring. I moved onto the National Salt marsh Survey for NPWS between 2007-2009. This was a great job and I got to survey over 50% of Irish salt marshes all around the coast of ROI. I got to see lots of fantastic sites and wildlife, and some of out coastlines spectacular scenery. Along the way I worked for many clients including local authorities, Coillte, consultancy companies and private individuals, mainly carrying baseline ecological surveys and ecological impact assessment. I joined Bord na Mona in 2009 as an Ecologist. My initial role was to carry out a baseline ecological survey of Bord na Monas bogs to support peatland rehabilitation. I can say I have know surveyed two-thirds of Bord na Mona's bogs - 55,000 ha and over 80 sites! This has been very rewarding and I have got to know the midland bogs of Ireland very well. Some of the best days were getting into really interesting sites and finding or seeing new species that I had not seen before. I saw my first Marsh Fritillary butterfly on a Bord na Mona cutaway. Bord na Mona was a big change compared to previously working self-employed. Now I was part of a much larger team. There was lots of support from BnM colleagues. There was a tea room! I was working now with surveyors, bog engineers, finance , bog ops staff, construction staff. Some of the best experiences were working with bogs ops staff and actually doing bog rehabilitation. Blocking drains. Coming back several weeks later and seeing the change in water-levels. Coming back again and again and seeing the change in vegetation cover, seeing new species appearing, seeing the rehabilitation working. I became Bord na Mona Ecology Team Lead, initially in 2018 and then full-time in 2019. This was heading into a very challenging time for Bord na Mona with more and more pressure to stop industrial peat extraction.
