About Mark Mcmullan
Host-pathogen dynamics drive adaptation but in agriculture only the pathogens evolve. Wild crop progenitor plants are a source of novel pathogen resistance. Wild plants do have greater genetic diversity but also, they are adapting to their pathogens, evolving new solutions, right now. Mark is using population genetics to understand this resistance gene evolution and identify new sources of resistance.Until recently, all crop pathogens lived on wild hosts and only since the invention of farming have pathogens made this jump. Many pathogens have speciated and yet others live on both wild and agricultural plants. Mark uses the differential evolution of pathogens on wild and agricultural hosts to identify the genes important for pathogen invasion and success in agriculture.Population genetic/genomic techniques underpin analyses on the evolution of the ash dieback fungus, sugar beet, and wheat pathogens and their hosts. The overarching focus of the projects I work on is to understand the effects of natural selection, hybridisation and genetic introgression on the evolution of pathogens to new environments (wild and agricultural) and the host response.

Senior Research Associate
I work on plant pathogen co-evolution. I'm particularly interested in the population genetics of pathogen invasion and the role of introgression in accelerating the rate of adaptation. I study these processes in a number of systems including the invading ash dieback pathogen and also in beet pathogens that live both in the wild and within agriculture. In many fungi, sex, which shuffles genetic variation between individuals, doesn't have to operate at every generation and this may be key to understanding how they evolve and adapt to new forms of host resistance.
Postdoctoral Research Associate
At TSL I focussed on the genomes of a number of isolates of the Oomycete plant pathogen Albugo candida. This pathogen can grow both on common weeds and on important agricultural crops. I was interested in better understanding how this species was able to to adapt to such a wide variety of hosts

At UEA I was involved (and am still involved) in the population genomics/genetics of four systems (i.e. Antarctic diatoms, Arabidopsis, rust fungus, and guppies). The overarching focus of these projects is on the effects of natural selection, hybridisation and genetic introgression.

Phd Student (C. Van Oosterhout)
During my PhD worked on the immune genes (MHC class IIb) of guppies and found evidence of evolution by natural selection. These MHC genes are involved in the detection and defence of a host against pathogens, and are present in all jawed vertebrate genomes. This work has increased our understanding of adaptive evolution through associative overdominance (MBE) and spatiotemporally fluctuating selection (PLoS one).
