About Mark Meiners

We live in a time of data explosion where everything is being tracked, manipulated, and tabulated. Data is being collected before it's needed just in case that someday it might be. Now, more than ever, data professionals are needed to bring insights and provide that edge business needs. Data science is in its infancy and building simple SQL queries is not enough to properly grasp the meanings in data. A blend of various skills must be brought to bear including math, programming, and business knowledge. Math provides a foundation, programming brings the data together, and business knowledge adds the context. Over my career, I’ve delved into each of these areas to expand my arsenal of skills. Slicing and dicing data then delivering it in a way business users can understand became my specialty. Data truly has the most interesting insights once you have the ability to add context to the content analyzed. Ask me how I voided the warranty on my espresso machine (an experiment of applying continuous improvement to my coffee drinking).

Sql Database Developer

Current

Phoenix, Arizona, United States

Nov 2021 - Present

Analytics Consultant

Freelance

• Earned MCSA: SQL 2016 Database Development Certification.• Enrolled in the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate program through Coursera.• Participated in Kaggle's 30 Days of ML and wished I had more PC power for hyperparameter optimization. Drinking from the firehose was so much fun. Next time I hope to win some swag!• Client had a breakthrough technological idea and asked if I could help. I explained that the tech stack was completely unlike anything I've ever touched but was willing to look into it. After spending some time doing research, I designed an experimental data collection system. I explained there were many unknowns until access to research hardware was available but I felt it was a reasonable starting point to look for data correlations. The client had my work reviewed and the reviewer made a few additions for more collection data streams. Beyond this, the client was pleased and submitted my design work as part of their funding proposal.

Feb 2019 - Nov 2021

Founder And Developer

Self-Employed

• Founded an indie game company as the C# developer. Used the Unity 3D engine and released weekly builds while integrating work from other team members.• Needing to give the game a hook, I played several similar games and took notes. The isometric style games I played seemed to not take advantage of vertical space. This makes sense in isometric style games as the player can’t aim vertically. My system provided a way for players to indicate they wanted to aim vertically and the auto-aim would search the space for objects then aim for the player. This opened new gameplay possibilities and dramatically improved the feeling of immersion.

Reporting Data Analyst (Its 3/Senior Ba)

Phoenix, Arizona, United States

• Performed statistical data analysis and data management using SQL Server, IBM Db2, Tableau Desktop, Access, Excel, SSIS, and SSRS. Examples include data visualizations of program delivery, staff performance analysis, and policy impact projections. • When my manager was looking for data unavailable in the Db2 data warehouse, I researched ways to pull it from the mainframe flat files. This led me to write custom SSIS ETL jobs with C# code while learning about packed decimal formats. Once I started analyzing the data in SQL Server and Tableau, we gained a huge understanding of client spending habits and found potential fraud indicators. • During the government shutdown, the financial analyst asked me to do a sanity check on the fiscal impact. Immediately I knew something was wrong with the numbers. Without running an ad hoc SQL query, I explained that policy for the distributions would suggest double the figure he handed me. After working late into the evening, I hand-delivered updated numbers to the assistant director for the morning brief.• Even though each division shared a mainframe system, there was very little automated communication between applications. My manager was concerned about potential fraud and abuse by our clients knowing this. I used my high level IT permissions to pull data from different divisions and calculate any discrepancies. The result was over 20 thousand cases with mismatching income that needed caseworker review.

Information Technology Specialist Iii

Phoenix, Arizona, United States

• Full stack .NET and SharePoint development as well as Windows Server/SQL Server backend administrator. Delivered projects using SDLC and Agile Kanban.• As part of the Tableau pilot project team, I successfully delivered dashboards reporting on division KPI such as cost effectiveness, timeliness and caseload. I also helped coworkers tune their dashboards for performance by showing how to write SQL code in pass-throughs and reviewing the Tableau log file.• While working on a SharePoint form and workflow, my customer gave up. Based on their feedback, I had rebuilt the form multiple times. They claimed that the system couldn't do what they want no matter my programming skills. I asked them to forget everything they knew about SharePoint and pretend I could do anything including interface with the office intercom. At that point, I was able to really dig into their needs without their previous limitations. After one last revision, I was able to deliver a solution my customer really needed and wanted within 1 week. By exceeding this particular customer's expectations, I had earned a reputation of walking on water. • The division’s SharePoint administrator resigned just prior to the system’s launch to production. To avoid an adverse audit finding, I volunteered to take over the migration and launch. Without any prior experience, I took the initiative to learn SharePoint system administration on my own time and dime. After successfully launching, we passed the audit check with 100%. From then, I owned the system, making continuous improvements with new workflows and sites for my business customers. • Walking by my coworker's desk, I noticed they had a second desktop. I was curious and asked about it. Turned out it was dedicated to reports that run overnight. I offered to help look at their queries and showed them ways to improve performance. Reports that took overnight were now running in under 5 minutes.

Management Analyst Ii

Phoenix, Arizona, United States

• The training administrator heard about one of my school projects and wanted the same system. I explained that while I could do that, there are several long term issues. At the time, I didn’t know how to use SQL Server and build a full-stack web application. I negotiated some lead time on the project so I could study. The online training system I built was robust and solved many of their traditional training problems such as storing scores, distributing classes, and increasing availability. • The training unit had a multi-year backlog of work when I was hired. The issue was that extensive programming was needed for the mainframe simulations. Each training had a unique version of the simulation. One of the first things I did was to create a generalized simulation engine. This new engine could be shared across trainings reducing development time by over 50%.
