As the Technology Committee Chair, I have helped re-orient DMLA's focus from exclusively representing the interests of licensed visual media, to an organization that not only honors its traditional core members but now embraces the growing number of technology and generative AI service providers that support and service our industry. This has involved attracting sponsorship from companies like Google, Adobe, Shutterstock, and Acquia.For more than seven decades, the Digital Media Licensing Association (DMLA) has advocated for, educated and connected the media production, distribution and licensing industry. We have worked to developed business standards and best practices. We actively advocate for copyright, ethical AI and issues like right of privacy on behalf of our members. Throughout an era of continuous change, we have remained an active community where vital information is shared and common interests are explored. DMLA believes the creators in this digital world should determine if, how and when their content is used and shared. DMLA has led the charge to protect copyright and strengthen copyright laws.

The DPA brings together a diverse range of AI data licensing providers and intellectual property owners, including those specializing in music, voice, text, video, and images. By establishing a unified voice for dataset providers, the alliance advocates for the interests of rights holders and works to create a sustainable and equitable ecosystem for the licensing of intellectual property content in the AI and ML industries.

I was an active participant in the UK Government's Intellectual Property Office working group on generative AI. The group set out to develop and codify good practice on the use of copyright and database material in text and data mining in relation to generative AI. The group's mandate was to ensure the creation of a balanced and pragmatic code of practice that would enable both sectors to grow in partnership. My recommendation to include provisions requiring AI platforms list their data sources was incorporated into the final white paper.

I developed and taught a progressive course in photojournalism aimed at undergraduate students seeking a fuller understanding of the role that visual media plays in the news gathering process. The class, which ran for 14 years, delved into the fundamentals of what is news, camera basics, aesthetics, the importance of visual media, digital asset management (DAM), the role that metadata plays in photo management and archiving, feature photography and spot news.

With support from IREX/ ProMedia, the United States Department of State and USAID, I organized numerous two- and three-day seminars on such topics as transitioning from analog to digital photography, new developments in photo editing, basic and advanced digital asset management, and conflict photography, aimed at professional photojournalists and editors in Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Serbia, Kosovo, Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, and Georgia.

I founded Red Dot, Central and Eastern Europe's first internet-based editorial and stock photo agency. In an era of analog, Red Dot was an evolutionary idea and was instrumental in speeding up the arrival and success of many of biggest names in print and online media serving the markets of former Soviet Europe. I created one of the world's first workflows for ingesting large amounts of both digital and analog still content, and I pioneered one of the first fixed vocabularies constructed exclusively for an online photo library. Red Dot operated as an aggregator of Corbis RM and RF photography in Hungary and Serbia until its successful sale to a regional rival in late 2011.

From 1991 through late 2001 I covered more than 20 conflicts and major natural disasters for Atlantic News Service. More than four years of that were spent photographically chronicling the war in the former Yugoslavia, and included working in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia. During the second half of the decade, I covered war and conflict in Chechnya, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Cyprus, Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, Iraq, Kuwait, Turkey, Congo, and Kosovo.My photograph of two lovers shot dead as they tried to escape Sarajevo, Bosnia, in May of 1993 won worldwide critical acclaim. The deaths of Bosnian Muslim Admira Ismic and Bosnian Serb Bosko Brkic, known to the world as Romeo and Juliet, was the subject of numerous news stories, music videos, theater productions, a ballet, as well as an Emmy Award nominated joint Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/ PBS Frontline TV documentary.
