Co-founded Uber Elevate and in 4 years established aerial ride sharing as a collaborative ecosystem with over $3.5B investment enabling aerial ride sharing. Prior to that, 32 years at NASA focusing on advanced aircraft concepts and technologies. The last 10 years at NASA was spent pioneering Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP), the tech that all eVTOL aircraft use to achieve ultra safe, quiet and efficient flight. This was done leading small concept to flight teams for radical new aircraft such as the Puffin (2009 single person Superman suit), 2012 Greased Lightning (tilt-wing drone), LeapTech (a Mad Max looking semi truck that was the first full scale DEP wing tested), and the X-57 (the first manned X-Plane NASA in 25 years).

Chief Technologist For On-Demand MobilityNasa Langley Research Center Jan 2015 - Feb 2017Hampton, Virginia, UsOn-Demand Mobility represents a highly convergent technology opportunity space for NASA, US Industry, and Academia. Several technology frontiers are rapidly advancing across autonomy, electric propulsion, robotic composite manufacturing, sensors and software systems to enable emergent aviation markets across small Unmanned Aerial Systems, advanced General Aviation products, and even Personal Air Vehicles that could fundamentally alter personal mobility and productivity. All these emerging markets share the same technology basis and challenges, with a clear need for NASA to provide leadership to enable these markets to evolve successfully. My job is to be a connector of the converging opportunities, and help facilitate a change in aviation that within the next 20 years could be quite breathtaking in terms of impact and market cap. -
Principal InvestigatorNasa Jan 1985 - Feb 2017Washington, Dc, UsX-57 SCEPTOR Flight Demonstrator Principle Investigator: A 5 year, $44M NASA research project to achieve the first manned Distributed Electric Propulsion aircraft, capable of achieving a 5x reduction in energy use at the high speed cruise (150 knots), along with lower community noise, improved ride quality, robust/redundant/reliable control, and 30% lower operating costs compared to existing GA aircraft. My responsibilities including overall leadership of the entire project including, concept formulation, pitching to attract funding, assembling an awesome team, project plan, and execution in partnership with the project manager.LEAPTech/HEIST Principle Investigator: One year rapid spiral development research project to test a 30' span, 300 hp Distributed Electric Propulsion wing utilizing 18 propellers across the leading edge of the wing to test the LEAPTech integration strategy. Project also designed/developed/fabricated a semi-truck mobile test rig for testing the LEAPTech wing at speed up to 80 mph to valid the highlift performance. Co-inventor of the Spread Spectrum Frequency approach for low noise.Centrifugally Stiffened Rotor HALE Concept Principal Investigator: Awarded a NIAC Fellowship to investigate a unique multi-tethered UAV system capable of achieving lower weight and drag than existing High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) aircraft configurations. GL-10/Lotus Project Lead: Two year research project to design/develop/fabricate/test small UAVs capable of VTOL takeoff/landing while achieving cruise efficiencies 4x better than existing rotorcraft. Concepts leveraged electric propulsion technologies and resulted in flight testing of the NASA GL-10 concept, along with the Joby Lotus concept.Puffin Personal VTOL Project Lead: Designed and developed the tailsitter Puffin concept for a single person VTOL aircraft capable of extremely low community noise while utilizing a redundant electric propulsion system.
