Surfnet Communications started as a local community wireless broadband provider in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Within a few years, it's networks covered 1/2 of Santa Cruz County and in 2005 we acquired another 300 sq mi network in San Luis Obispo County in a friendly take-over.Working together with the Central Coast Broadband Consortium (CCBC), Surfnet and a partner company Sunesys, recently helped secure $13M grant from the state to build a Central Coast Regional Fiber Backbone. Surfnet is on track to become a major Central Coast infrastructure provider and is working with local governments, investors, and ISPs to develop a vibrant regional information technology industry.

Lionhearth Technologies was an early leader in the field of virtual communications - the concept of augmenting internet voice protocols (VoIP) with virtual environment displays in order to make the communication process more productive/enjoyable.Lionhearth received multiple military development contracts from DARPA, the Army's Communication and Electronics Command (CECOM) and from Toshiba and Fujitsu in Japan. When 9/11 happened, however, and the military switched its attention from "command and control" to "weapons of mass destruction", Lionhearth had to fold and lost this market to its major competitor - Skype.

Crystal River's Founder and the Board of Directors recruited me to prepare this six-year-old, 3D-Audio start-up for acquisition. While developing a business and marketing plan, a new corporate identity program, and a better accounting system, we found major new investors, strategic allies, and development contracts. CRE’s main product line was incorporated into Windows 95 thereby assuring its market value and the company was successfully acquired by Aureal Semiconductor in 1996.

I joined Trimble, the early leader in GPS technology, when sales were $5M/yr and participated in its growth to $150M/yr. I held a number of positions in engineering, marketing, business development, and product line management, primarily in the Avionics Division I helped to create. We completed 1992 profitably with $24.3M in gross revenues and 1993 with $38M in revenues. In 1993, the division received the Manufacturer of the Year Award from the Aircraft Electronics Association. Working on contracts with the FAA, our early GPS designs were used to develop the standards for GPS navigation, non-precision approach and differential landing systems within the current National Air Space system. Chief Engineer for Loran Navigation ProductsHeld primary technical responsibility for LORAN Sensors and Multi-Sensor Navigation Systems in corporate-wide products. Developed a DSP based LORAN receiver and certified the world's first interoperable LORAN/GPS. This product family accounted for $5M of sales in 1988 and was ranked as the best Trimble product family in a 1991 customer satisfaction survey.

Department Manager, Graphics LaboratoryHeaded the Anti-Aliased Graphics and Multimedia Video Processing Project at HP Labs. Work resulted in early demonstrations of multimedia, better graphics memory designs for UNIX workstations, and demonstration of a 256 bit GPU designed and fabricated using a dedicated bit-slice architecture.Department Manager, Special Processors, RISC Architecture LaboratoryDeveloped the special processors architecture for HP's Spectrum PA-RISC Machine.
