    I completed a PhD as part of the HRB-funded SPHeRE programme, a structured PhD programme in health services research. I have received rigorous training in quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, quality assessment and improvement initiatives and healthcare policy. My PhD addressed the management of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus in the community and encompassed a systematic review, an observational study and a pilot cluster randomised control trial. I supervised by Professor Susan Smith and Professor Tom Fahey from the HRB Centre for Primary Care Research and Professor Molly Byrne from the Department of Psychology, NUI Galway.I had 5 publications from the PhD and over 14 peer-reviewed publications.
