I completed a PhD as part of the HRB-funded SPHeRE programme, a structured PhD programme in health services research. I have received rigorous training in quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, quality assessment and improvement initiatives and healthcare policy. My PhD addressed the management of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus in the community and encompassed a systematic review, an observational study and a pilot cluster randomised control trial. I supervised by Professor Susan Smith and Professor Tom Fahey from the HRB Centre for Primary Care Research and Professor Molly Byrne from the Department of Psychology, NUI Galway.I had 5 publications from the PhD and over 14 peer-reviewed publications.

ICGP Board member for three years. Responsibilities included ensuring accountability of College financial and strategic decision-making, in line with the ICGP vision and mission statement and reporting to ICGP Council and Membership. I co-developed a new College strategy and assessed audit and risk for the organisation. I was Chair of ICGP Communications for three years. I was also Vice-Chair of the ICGP Education Governance Committee and had co-developed a review of College education functions.

I completed the Sligo Specialist Training Scheme in General Practice and was the winner of the inaugural James McCormick Award, 2013. I worked as a GP Registrar in Ardara (Donegal), Ballinamore (Leitrim) and Sligo Town.
