NEXSEN is a biotech company working very diligently to develop the next generation of Nano biotech-based rapid testing sensor technology. Our focus is currently on producing our first product – a Group B Strep Sensor. Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is more commonly known as Group B Strep.Group-B Strep is a type of bacteria that is naturally found in the digestive and lower reproductive tracts. Unfortunately, babies can be infected by GBS before birth, (and up to about 6 months of age) due to their underdeveloped immune systems. GBS causes infections in the blood (sepsis), the fluid and lining of the brain (meningitis), and lungs (pneumonia).If a mother is a carrier of GBS that is not treated with antibiotics during labour, the baby’s risk of becoming colonised with the organism is approximately 50%, and with it comes the risk of developing a serious, life-threatening GBS infection. When treated with antibiotics during labour, the risk of their infant developing an early GBS infection drops significantly.NEXSEN can make a real difference if it is successful in developing a non-pathology and low-cost rapid test solution using its Nano biotech sensor. Certainly, if it improves accessibility and increased testing frequency, this will elevate detection rates and allow for early intervention with appropriate treatments. Importantly, in developing countries our sensor could be game-changing. In many developing countries, almost half of all deaths in children under five years of age occurs in the first month of life, with one of the leading causes of these deaths being Group B Strep.

Strategic Energy Resources (ASX:SER) is a versatile explorer with a diversified portfolio of mineral assets and the capabilities to unlock project potential. The company is focused on the exploration and development of land with prospective large discoveries in Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria.While CEO at SER, I achieved a range of corporate transformation objectives:- Oversaw the transformation of SER from an oil and gas exploration company to a minerals exploration and production company.- Re-invigorated the Uley mine project, which had been stagnant for 20 years.- De-risked the company by significantly reducing exposure to oil and gas commitments while retaining upside exposure to future drilling successes.- Successfully de-merged the Uley graphite mine followed by the ASX listing of Valence Industries.In addition to the above achievements, I also successfully launched Ionic Industries which was de-merged from SER in June 2015. Ionic Industries started as a collaboration between Strategic Energy Resources (SER) and Monash University with funding support from the Australian Research Council. In 2010, I identified an opportunity to work with the Monash University Mechanical Engineering and Nanoscale Science and Engineering Laboratory on the development of graphene-based technologies. The research program required graphite, which we were able to supply from our Uley facility.
