This research focuses on interactions between cannabinoids and opioids and their potential pain relieving effects. These compounds both produce analgesic effects through distinct mechanisms, although opioids tend to produce adverse effects such as respiratory depression, tolerance, and physical dependence when given chronically. Cannabinoid compounds (e.g. delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, a psychoactive constituent of marijuana) can also produce pain relieving effects under a variety of conditions and can enhance the analgesic effects of opioids. My work combines behavioral and in vivo electrophysiological approaches to study the analgesic and learning and memory effects of cannabinoid and opioid combinations. Show less

The opioid abuse epidemic requires novel strategies to reduce opioid dependence, abuse, and overdose. Studies suggest that cannabinoids in combination with opioids reduce the dosage of opioid required to produce pain relief, also known as “opioid-sparing” effects. This project aims to investigate both mechanistic and clinically translational applications of the opioid-sparing effects of cannabinoids.
