Mark hails from a small town in Western Massachusetts. He was a chess prodigy, and at the ripe age of 12 taught laboratory techniques to postgraduate students in marine biology at Springfield College. His first book (on computer databases) was published at the age of 16. Much to his surprise, and despite starting at Wharton, Mark emerged with a doctorate in the eminently more practical field of medieval philosophy. He subsequently taught at GWU and Howard University. The siren call of the newly-founded Singapore Management University proved too great to resist, and there for the next 13 years he happily taught, researched, and published in the humanities and social sciences. Upon leaving SMU, Mark briefly joined the civil service, where he developed the 3-year workplan and budget for iN.LAB, Singapore’s public catalyst for EduTech. Since 2018, Mark has been focused on the growth of LogicMills, an education company he co-founded in 2005. LogicMills teaches and assesses 21st Century Skills using games. The efficacy of the LogicMills curriculum was demonstrated in a 2-year, S$1.09m study conducted by the Singapore MOE. More than 2,000 primary and secondary students of diverse ability levels, ages, and social backgrounds were shown to benefit academically and grow as learners. On national, high-stakes exams (i.e., the Singapore PSLE) students with LogicMills training performed 16.8% better than comparable students without it.Students who represent Singapore on the PISA exam go through either the LogicMills program or a white-labelled version of it (a fact not typically reported by the press). The influence of LogicMills is seen in Singapore’s performance on the special tests of the PISA. In 2012, Singapore students came 1st for problem solving skills; in 2015, 1st in collaborative problem solving; and in 2018, 1st in global competencies. In 2012 Mark created MirMe®, the world’s first objective, online, game-based assessment for 21st Century Skills. Validated in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute (Berlin), MirMe is an age-normed psychometric assessment that can track skills development over a lifetime, from ages 9 to 99. It is used by companies and ministries of education throughout ASEAN to evaluate 21st Century Skills and measure employability skills. Research shows MirMe® to be a better predictor of academic performance than other well-known assessments, including the Cambridge A-Levels.
