About Mark O'Brien

In High School I knew I wanted to work in broadcasting. What I didn’t know was that, like any business, broadcasting involves more than meets the eye. I have been privileged to work both in front of and behind the cameras and microphones. In fact it did not take long for my professional disk jockey career to end by my own hand. I told my station manager that I wanted to make more money and he said the way to do that was sales. I started the next week and never looked back.Since then I have sold advertising, handled technical operations, managed and owned radio stations, brokered deals for buying and selling stations; worked as a banker lending to the industry, broadcast station appraiser, expert witness, M&A consultant, and more. All the while I was pulled towards technology which became my second passion.As a technologist, I considered transitioning into IT but decided instead to focus on using technology within broadcasting. My engineering and IT background played a big role in my development of software and tools that helped me be a better broker and consultant. Those tools soon became a commercial product that remains successful to this day – over 20 years later.My work with SpectraRep for the last 17 years is the perfect blend of broadcasting and technology. I get to work with television stations all over the country deploying technology I designed and helped create to transmit encrypted IP data. It did not take long to determine that the best use of this datacasting capability was helping law enforcement and public safety agencies improve their video and data sharing. As I work to expand my skills and network within public safety, I find great satisfaction in merging these two worlds. Creating partnerships, leveraging technology and making the world a safer place is not the broadcasting career I envisioned in High School, but it has been very rewarding and I would not change a thing.
