Senior Manufacturing Engineer in the AFRC forging team. Gear manufacture theme lead, recruiting new members to the AFRC collaborative research membership. Role links traditional gear manufacturers with cutting edge research in forming and forging, including hosting significant UK based knowledge exchange conferences and engaging internationally in the gear sector. Lead engineer for the AFRC’s involvement in a large scale automotive research project, alongside a UK consortium for the rebuilding transmission supply chain. Role developing opportunity for Scottish & global based manufacturing network to engage in local, high volume manufacturing research. Additionally, lead engineer in the development and delivery of some of the AFRC’s largest commercial research projects.

Manufacturing Engineer in the AFRC forging team. Lead engineer and project lead on aerospace and oil & gas projects. Lead forging engineer on multi-disciplinary automotive project. Responsible for industrial trials on collaborative customer R&D work. Researching expansion capability within the AFRC into the automotive sector, through design for manufacture, gear design, die design, forging and inspection of bevel gears (building on experience from employment at Albion Motors). Lead consulting engineer on assessment of customer forging process.

Research Assistant in AFRC forging team, working on multi-customer core projects and directly funded consulting projects. Development and testing of new designs and materials on bespoke, prototype 2000T/350°C servo-press and 500T/300°C mechanical forging press. Evaluation of material mechanical properties and recommendations for process variable control in the introduction of new materials, using 1200°C inert atmosphere furnace. Role requires mechanical knowledge of the press and forging stages to improve on current aerospace components through experimentation with novel materials. Presented research findings results to AFRC technical board. Commissioning of a 63T press for manual and automated use.

Working as part of a design project to scientifically investigate the effectiveness of current wrist/hand orthoses (WHO), and develop a new device for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The development of the project has used 3D anatomical modelling for accurate sizing of structural components for a new WHO. Product development improved skills with 3D scanning and manipulation to digitally record both anatomical data and prototype designs for re-sizing. Software/Software used:Pro/Engineer / CreoGeo-MagicKonica Minolta 9i 3D scannerOhio WIlliowood Tracer CAD 3D scanner/software Project work also included a scientific study into the effectiveness of current wrist/hand othosis design, the results of which will be published at the International Conference for Prosthetics & Orthotics in Hyderabad, India (Feb 2013). The project has already delivered data to the UK Hand Wrist and Shoulder conference (2011) and is currently involved in negotiations with potential industrial partners. Continuing Professional DevelopmentIn the final stages of CAPM qualification (Certified Associate in Project Management).

Automotive Driveline Division. Responsible for a number of areas of product development. Excellent knowledge of 2D/3D CAD design with NX IDEAs-based CAD/PLM systems, resulting in a total of 3500 hours use. Use of CAD systems at all stages of product development to introduce and design new products, and to review and implement cost saving measures on current production. All steps of design and release of changes closely monitored by experience with TS16949 operational standards.
