The asset owner for two Continious Casting Machines, responsible for ensuring that they are operational and available to cast steel when required. Coordinating the efforts of 2 engineering and technical teams and liaising with 4 shifts that work 24/7 to make sure that they have everything required to operate the machines safely and efficiently. Tracking problems on the machines and assisting with the coordination of planned maintenance periods to maintain the reliability and condition of the machines.

The role is a varied one involving the planning and overview of production processes including material processing and dispatch, working with downstream customers and also the planning and execution of maintenance and engineering tasks, while liaising with the departmental engineering team and production planners and also ensuring that all tasks are completed while adhering to Health and Safety policies and have minimum impact on production. Communication between upstream manufacturing units and downstream customers is essential to the role and involves departments and companies both across the whole of a very large integrated steelworks and also off site private companies. The role also involves the planning and execution of CAPEX schemes and their delivery on time and on budget.• The successful reorganisation of maintenance regimes on a key piece of equipment reducing unplanned delays.• The modification of parts of a key piece of equipment to allow greater and longer utilisation between maintenance.• The introduction of consumable stores accounting system preventing unplanned production delays.

A role covering the length and breadth of an integrated steelworks managing several teams from different companies with differing objectives and making sure that safety procedures are followed and key performance indicators are met on a shift by shift basis. Responsible for the asset availability of many pieces of heavy industrial equipment including cranes, vehicles and secondary processing machines, coordinating any repairs while adhering to strict safety procedures which involve immobilisation, isolation and permits, at the same time minimising the impact on production. Liaison across site with different departments, to ensure that the down stream customer gets the material required on time, in the required quantities and to specification. Carrying out quality assurance and technical inspections on material and reporting any defects back up the supply chain to allow preventative measures to be taken that will stop a reoccurrence. Identifying, planning and executing Continuous Improvement (C.I.) activities that can be undertaken on shift with minimal support to improve efficiency and safety. Conducting accident/incident investigations including drug and alcohol tests and compiling reports for senior day management for “sharing and learning” and possible use in disciplinary proceedings.• The writing of accident/incident reports that have been identified as “Plant standard” and adopted as a template.• The successful completion of multiple C.I. projects within the department.• Identification of a serious fault with plans for structural work on a crane and subsequent report which save the company many thousands of pounds and prevented a safety issue arising.

Supporting the Shift Manager and liaising with day personnel, responsible for leading and directing a number of shift multi-disciplined teams within the manufacturing unit, ensuring that team operational targets, product quality, customer service and safety objectives are met. Looking at the broader picture and progressing improvements while ensuring day to day targets are achievable by the team. Making decisions and resolving issues, with the drive and commitment to maintain standards and address problems by utilising the ethos of continuous improvement through the efforts of their team. In particular the Shift Operations Manager was responsible for ensuring teams pursue defined improvement activities, co-ordinating and supporting teams in pursuit of training objectives, monitoring teams performances in all aspects including safety, operational and housekeeping to defined standards including ensuring all permits and other safety systems are correctly applied and coordinated across teams, also ensuring communications within and across teams is carried out to support business objectives and playing an important role in team briefings. Responsible for asset tracking of all technical stores and equipment held within the British armed forces only Rapier surface to air missile regiment including live ammunition of all types. This includes the investigation of all losses and damage, and the authorisation for ordering new equipment to replace, that which was lost damaged or unserviceable in order to maintain the operational efficiency of the unit. The procurement, testing and transportation of multi million pound equipment for reasons of urgent operational requirement. Responsibility for the safe and efficient removal and disposal of all waste, and the disposal and recycling of unwanted equipment and materials. Also responsibility for all matters Health and Safety within the company including work place inductions of up to 400 peopleAchievements• The instigation of new safety procedures that will stop the issue of the wrong type of ammunition.• Implementing new security procedures to ensure that keys for secure areas could not be issued to non authorised persons• Sourcing ways to dispose of unused or obsolete IT equipment to save money and improve efficiency.• Managing the entire department when the senior manager went on a six-month leave of absence.• Taking a leading role in the relocation of the Regiment from London to Lincolnshire. As a result of this there was minimum disruption to the regiments operational effectiveness that had elements deployed in several different countries at this time.

In sole charge of the initial recruitment, interviewing and selection of up 180 graduate and undergraduates from all walks of life and commonwealth countries aged 18 to 27 and there subsequent training and development up to and including Military training Qualification level 2 and commissioning at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. In addition to this overseas expeditions to such places as China and Mongolia were planned and organised in order to help broaden the student’s horizons.Achievements• Conception and instigation of a completely new training plan and management style, which was required because of a lack of success on the officer-commissioning course due to outdated training techniques.• The successful mentoring of a training team to enable them to deliver the training effectively.• The unit moving from 2nd bottom out of a league of 19 such units to 3rd from top over the subsequent 2 years.• The unit’s average commissioning grade rose from an average D to B with many A grades and several best student awards.
