About Mark Patrick Tay

I am a final year student at University of Western Australia, pursuing an undergraduate in Landscape Architecture. I aspire to be a Zoo Designer have a career in the fascinating world of wildlife. I have experience in different departments (Operations and Events) within Mandai Wildlife Group (MWG) and am currently working at Perth Zoo as a Customer Service Officer. I am a team player in nature, willing to help those around me and complete given tasks collectively.I enrolled into university in February 2023. I have moulded my education to gain the skills I require to be a zoo designer. Along with majoring in Landscape Architecture, I have taken electives units in animal biology and ecology throughout my education. I aim to learn about animals and the environmental factors that contributes to their welfare. Aside from the landscape of the exhibits, I also aim to focus on improving facilities. Having work in operations both as a Guest Relations Officer and a Tram Captain, I gain invaluable experience on the ground. I plan to use this to understand what different consumer gaps exist within the park for example, how staff morale may affect guest experiences. Using strategic decision planning, I am to find innovative solutions to improve the landscapes of zoos, including guest viewing areas, guest/staff facilities, etc.I would also like to quote Dr. Ong Swee Law who described the zoo as “A place where people come close to nature and learn to care for it”. This inspires me to spread the knowledge that zoos are meant to be educational to not only children but also adults. This is my motivation to want to design a green public space where everyone can learn about wildlife and their environment.
