A prototype polymer was prepared and worked [coefficient of friction > 0.7], so the concept was seen to be sound. With the assistance of The University of Texas at San Antonio, and my business partner Tom Hibler, a company, Ice Grips, Inc. was formed to commercialize the polymers, which are protected under U.S. Patent 7195799.After obtaining a Master’s degree in chemistry at Vanderbilt University under J. C. Martin, I worked at G. D. Searle & Co. for six years in drug discovery, then 3 ½ years at ILEX Oncology (drug discovery and pilot plant production). After that I worked at The University of Texas at San Antonio as a lecturer, then entered their (then new) Ph. D. program and obtained my degree in August 2011.
