Major successes include very large funding awards secured for: a volunteering legacy project around the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games with investment from the Cabinet Office and Government Olympic Executive, bringing on board vInspired as a backer for Do-it's youth volunteering work, Department of Health for several projects including mental health advocacy. I also sat on the Department of Health's steering group shaping their new volunteering strategy for health and social care. YouthNet continues to provide information and emotional support for young people in the UK, enabling their users to make the right choices for them. Under their new brand name The Mix, they believe digital is a force for good, helping young people get to their services wherever and whenever they need them. Do-it, YouthNet's creation as the national volunteering database, was transferred to the new Do-it Trust after 12 years of huge growth. -
ChairmanBritish Deaf Tennis Association May 1998 - May 2010Queen'S Club, London And The National Tennis Centre, RoehamptonI worked in a voluntary capacity for GB Deaf Tennis, supported wonderfully by the LTA and the Tennis Foundation and a dedicated committee of volunteers. This was the first example of a National Governing Body of Sport taking a positive lead to integrate deaf and wheelchair tennis into its core activities and adopt best practice for doing so. A great legacy is the high number of talented Deaf coaches working for a living today at tennis clubs across the UK, fully accredited with the LTA. During my time with GB Deaf Tennis, we became one of the most competitive nations globally, winning multiple medals at Deaflympic Games, European Championships and the Dresse & Maere Cups (equivalent of the Davis and Federation Cups). I also acted as GB Deaf Tennis Manager at Summer Deaflympics (Rome, Italy 2001), European Deaf Tennis Championships (Sheffield, England 1996 and Kottingbrunn, Austria 2000) and was part of the Tournament Organising Team for British Open (Cardiff 1999, Nottingham 2002 and 2006).In recognition of this voluntary work, I received the Torch Trust Trophy Award in 2002 and the LTA Meritorious Award in 2010 for outstanding voluntary work with GB Deaf Tennis, both kindly nominated by the Tennis Foundation.

Significant accomplishments included: doubling the annual income from these sources, not including the award of a £15.1m Lottery well-being project for older people which I helped secure; winning DFID funding for an older people advocacy project in Ukraine; strengthening positive relationships with the Department of Health including a very large funding award for mental health advocacy amongst several project investments; leading successful tenders from DTI for age discrimination advice for older people and from DWP for money tree financial planning advice for older people.Age Concern England trades today under a new merged entity, Age UK. They combat loneliness, provide advice and enable independence as the largest charity actively working with and for older people in the UK, with the support of local branches in a federation. -

I was recruited to steady the charity facing severe financial difficulties from the outset.Achievements included: undertaking strategic corporate review and initiating change management in consultation with trustees, employees, partners and funders; assembling a streamlined management team and smaller, more skilled workforce of 16; undertaking strategic planning and project development, securing significant awards from DfES Connexions and Camelot Foundation to support young people and families with deaf children; recommending and implementing a merger with the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS), working through the due diligence process safeguarding a core team of project staff who transferred to the NDCS. Today NDCS continues many of FYD's previous activities, to the age of 18. It is the leading charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people, with the support of their families in the belief that deaf children can do anything other children can do.

I also project managed three ground-breaking economic valuation projects measuring the indirect spend in the local economy inspired by the Trust's work in conserving outstanding landscapes, and represented the Trust in external forums and working parties. My policy expertise focused on land-use and regional planning guidance, charity tax, rural economy, housing and volunteering. Significant accomplishments included: designing and project managing economic valuation studies ‘Valuing our environment’ in Cumbria, North East and Wales with support of tourism partners and regional development agencies; developing detailed appraisal of the government’s fiscal policies including economic impact of Chancellor’s Budgets; successfully influencing HM Treasury who introduced new charitable giving incentives in 2000; author of sustainable development guide to inform National Trust land management practice; monitoring passage of devolution parliamentary bills, tabling amendments and briefing MPs on the National Trust’s inalienable privileges, devolution of National Trust byelaws to Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly which were successfully safeguarded.The National Trust remains a household name as the leading UK conservation charity protecting historic places and green spaces, and opening them up for ever, for everyone.
